Refugees in Calais ignored by France government

Alex Wolf | 30.12.2007 12:32 | Migration

Hundreds of refugees have gathered in Calais. Many risk there lives to go to Britain.

On first Christmas day as many people are overeating themselfs I have made a photostory about the many refugees in Calais. They are ignored by the France government. Children from the age of 12 are left in the cold. Many of them sleep outside in selfmade shelters near the coastline. They all want to make it to Engeland and many risk their lives trying.

A really good first hand report on the situation in Calais by an Anglo-French activist can be found here:

Are the no borders people helping these individuials to claim asylum in France so they can get food, warmth and shelter ?

The French Red Cross is excellent in providing all the info they will need.

KOR

The French Red cross have not been in Calais since 2002

KOR , think most of the reasons why people want to go to England were addressed by me in the additions.

However I just thought I'd point out that any help being offered is entirely by local people and that the French Red Cross shamefully left when Sangatte closed in 2002 leaving the situation to be picked up by local people.

There is an erroneous logic of the Dublin convention and the safe third country rule .It absolves Britain from any responsibilty for anyone seeking asylum, and crossing land or sea borders unless they are people being tortured or persecuted in France. If there were we'd probably have people like you say say they should claim in Germany.

By the same logic of this convention it is right that Syria and Iran with practically no resources on hand take responsibilty for 2 and 3 million refugees respectively from Iraq, while Britain and America take a few hundred and practically no responsibilty whatsoever for the consequential misery and suffering their actions have inflicted on millions,

I notice you haven't included these points in your comment
