Today the group of activists calling themselves the Sizewell Blockaders visited Sizewell nuclear power station again.
But this time they did not lock themselves together to block the workers entering Sizewell A and B but challenged the director of Sizewell, Mr Dowds to a public debate.
In an interview with Look East back in August Mr Dowds said that he was confused by the Climate change activists protest at the nuclear power stations because “ nuclear power does not produce any greenhouse gasses’. The ‘Sizewell Blockaders’ have accused Mr Dowds of deliberately misleading the public to encourage support for the nuclear industry.
The activists claim that nuclear power is not CO2 free and is damaging to the environment in many other ways.
Mell Harrison, one of the Sizewell Blockaders from Eastern CND said “ The nuclear industry never seems to talk about the whole process from start to finish. Uranium mining, transportation of radioactive materials, building of the stations themselves, in addition to the whole issue of decommissioning, should be included in the debate.
Emma Bateman, a graphic designer said “ We are often told that we need nuclear power so that we don’t have to rely on other countries for our energy, but uranium comes from abroad and is a finite resource. If the number of nuclear power stations rises so will the cost of uranium. Uranium mining creates tons of CO2, so the claim that nuclear power is clean is completely wrong.”
The Sizewell blockaders would like a debate with Mr Dowds in front of the media and the public about the CO2 emissions of the nuclear power industry from start to finish and any other issues surrounding the claim that Nuclear power is one of the answers to climate change.
