Santa says "NO NO NO" to Snatch Squads
A gaggle of Santas descended yesterday on North Shields Immigration Reporting Centre, Norfolk Street, North Shields. Using a lock-on device in the shape of giant Christmas crackers, they blockaded the Centre to stop Immigration Service 'snatch squads' leaving to carry out dawn raids at the homes of asylum seeking families living in the region.
Clare Ritty, a spokesperson for the group, said "while other children across the north east are looking forward to Christmas visitors, some kids are living in fear of a knock on the door. It brings shame to the region that we allow children to be dragged from their beds by Immigration Service snatch squads in the early hours of the morning. The snatch squads are an inhumane cog in an inhumane wheel. The right to freedom of movement and the right to live in safety should be rights available to everyone."
The action was part of a national day of action by the No Border Network.
