Bath demo on anti foie-gras day of action

Bath Activist | 16.12.2007 18:20 | Animal Liberation

To mark the national day of action against the sick torture 'treat' otherwise known as foie gras, Bath Animal Action and Bath Activist Network demo'd a local deli.

16 of us decended on the 'epicere gourmande', a deli in guildhall market that has been selling tinned foie gras. After refusing to stop selling, their scummy buisness became the centre of a 4 hour long demo, involving megaphones, leaflets, petitions and amusing songs about the 'delicacy of despair', turning away many customers and getting loads of support. We also chose the day to launch our campaign and petition to persuade the council to ban the sale of foie gras in Bath. We ended the day with an impressive 500 signatures.
The unfortunate deli was surrounded, with activists at the fornt and back entrances of the market and some standing direcley infront of the shop with a megaphone, letting passers by know the shops dirty little secret.
After demoing for an hour longer than expected, we decided to leave after some old guy wouldn't leave us alone, saying foie gras was 'kind to ducks' and the managers father turned up and called the cops (who had been called throughout the day, but never showed up!).
This is just the beggining - Epicere Gourmande will be the next in a long line of Bath resteraunts and delis to remove foie gras from their shelves. As we told them on the day - we never give in, and we always win!

P.S Foie gras is a form of duck liver pate, produced by force feeding male ducks (the females are killed at birth) through metal tubes until their livers have swollen to 10 times the natural size. This causes extreme pain, restriction of movement, and disease in the ducks.
