Manchester supporters of NO2ID, the national campaign against identity cards
and the database state, will be inviting the public to pledge opposition to the
Government's schemes in St. Anne's Square this coming Saturday.

The NO2ID Pledge is a chance for people to stand up and be counted. The wording
is simple and direct:

"I solemnly and publicly promise that:

* I shall not register for a national identity card
* I shall not supply personal details or fingerprints to a National Identity
Register
* I shall not apply for any document or service if joining the National
Identity Register is a condition of obtaining it
* I shall not co-operate with any Identity and Passport Service interview
concerning my identity

I also promise by my example to encourage others to do the same."

The NO2ID Pledge is not made to the Government, or even to the NO2ID campaign.
Anybody can take the Pledge, to their friends, family or co-workers. NO2ID
encourage people to share the Pledge in their own way. Carry a pledge card in
your wallet. Frame a certificate on your desk. Pin it to the office
noticeboard. Hand it out around the pub. This is a commitment for us all to
stand together.

Manchester NO2ID Co-Ordinator Dave Page adds, "This pledge is entirely legal.
We are not asking people to break the law, because there is currently no law
against keeping yourself safe from Government control over your identity. Rest
assured that we will let you know if the Government try to make you into a
criminal for taking this pledge.

"The National Identity Scheme is extortionate, unworkable and useless, and more
and more people now realise this. The Government has demonstrated its
incompetence, and its desperation to control people's lives, in losing data and
lying about biometrics. By taking the NO2ID Pledge, you're helping protect
yourself, your friends and family."

Manchester NO2ID will be inviting people to take the Pledge this Saturday (8
th December) from 1pm to 3pm in St. Anne's Square, Manchester. Our next monthly
meeting is on Wednesday 12th December from 7pm to 9pm in the upstairs meeting
room of the Town Hall Tavern, Tib Lane, Manchester.

NO2ID is the UK-wide, non-partisan campaign opposing the government's planned
ID card and National Identity Register. We bring together individuals and
organisations from all sections of the community and seek to ensure that the
case against ID cards and the database state is forcefully put forward in the
media, in the corridors of power and at grassroots level. We continue to
actively campaign on all fronts for the abolition of the ID scheme and repeal
of the Identity Cards Act 2006.
