Arrest at Nottingham Uni over Palestine Protest

Yesterday, a protest occurred outside the Hallward Library on the University Park Campus, to raise awareness about the Israeli West Bank barrier, aka 'the wall'.

Wall goes up
Wall goes up

Wall gets sprayed
Wall gets sprayed

Police arrive

Wall gets dismantled
Wall gets dismantled

Yesterday, a protest occurred outside the Hallward Library on the University Park Campus, to raise awareness about the Israeli West Bank barrier, aka 'the wall'. A mock wall was constructed and spray-painted with slogans and images.

This protest caused a lot of comotion from a number of parties and after Nottingham Uni security failed to apprehend the situation, the police were called. This resulted in the threat of arrest to a number of students; breach of the peace, assaulting a police officer, 'filming a police officer'(!), obstructing a police officer and obstruction of the highway.

One student was arrested to 'apprehend a breach of the peace', despite actually doing very little wrong.

The wall was dismantled (rather symbolic given the context) and moved on after about half an hour.

Police state, anyone?

Solidarity

This looks like a dangerous and unwanted precedent for the university to set. Previous protests on campus that have been more confrontational have never received such attention from the authorities before. What was the difference this time? That there were Muslims prominently involved? That solidarity with Palestinians is something that they'd rather wipe out from campus? Maybe they've just decided it's the time for a crackdown on any protest.

Let's show solidarity with the arrested student and the protestors who were disrupted by the police. If we don't this kind of thing will become the norm.

Seems democracy walls get taken down in China & Notts university

Nice little theatre against apartheid in Isreal. Shows how sad notts uni is acting in such a authoritarian way.It was
hoped its big links with Chinese unis might help chinese students get access to more democracy, shame!

what was the arrested specifically arrested for?
which highway were you obstructing?didnt seem like it?
What are the university thinking about?

Seems democracy walls get taken down in China & Notts university.

there were recent victories against the police FIT teams monitoring DSIR armstrade organisers. Check indymedia uk pages, the polices own evidence eventually proved their own charges were total rubbish

Maybe students should start wearing black armbands to mourn the death of democracy at notts uni like the women in black antizionist & antiwar protesters. Chinese students & bejing workers put on black clothing & armbands in mourning & resistance against the Chinese government & battalions.

He was arrested to apprehend a breach of the peace; more for refusing to stop talking than for the wall itself. The person who was arrested was little known amongst the organisers of the protest and was not, I believe, particularly active in organising th event.

Obstruction of the highway was barely mentioned. In fact, the police, as usual, had very little idea what the legal grounds for anything were.

keep it real

what they needed was a few people dressed in "dynamite outfits" to represent suicide bombers with maybe the remains of dead jewish children scattered about the floor to make it look authentic

this time keep it really real

what has the wall got to do with suicide bombings? nothing. it's a massive land grab to further demoralise the palestinians and preclude the possibility of a viable palestinian state. but no, let's get real and throw some rubbish about dead children in to obscure any genuine political debate.
