Liberal Democrats launch 'Friends of Palestine

Peter Small | 17.11.2007 21:04 | Palestine

After years (post 9/11) of silence at Conference on the Israel/Palestine issue, the Liberal Democrats have supported the fomration and launching of the Liberal Democrat Friends of Palestine. Its first success was helping draft a foreign policy motion calling on the suspension of the EU/Israel Association Agreement until such time as Israel complies with the rule of international humanitarian law. The Motion was passed almost unanimously at Conference.

CONFERENCE DOUBLES LDFP MEMBERSHIP!

Lib Dem Friends of Palestine doubled its membership at the Brighton Conference thanks to a strong presence both in the Exhibition Stand and its fringe meetings. The Conference also created a strong arrival and impact by yielding an almost unanimous vote for the Motion on Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories. And at the last moment the Federal Conference Committee agreed to accept our Amendment 2 on a more explicit line on the EU Association Trade Agreement with Israel.

Thanks to support from CAABU and literature help from the UK Branch of the Israeli Committee Against House Demolitions (ICAHD), there was a strong turnout for our inaugural fringe on the Monday evening, followed by a good AGM that has set the direction for building on the achievements of Conference.

Our Conference Stall literature was significantly boosted by a range of material from ICAHD and Jeff Halper’s booklet ‘Counter-Rhetoric sold very well. We also managed to sell a small number of Jeff’s major book ‘Obstacles to Peace’ and the CD ‘The Iron Wall’.

Future events include a presence at the Eastern, Western and Northern Regional Conferences over the coming weeks, with plans for pushing our key messages in lobbying and briefing on 28th November at the House of Commons, a stall at the 2008 Liverpool Conference, along with a smaller but much enhanced Stall at Bournemouth 2008.

We have already started work on producing our own LDFP-branded literature, so that by Liverpool we can offer a range of saleable and free information booklets, pamphlets and handouts that support our key messages of the need for primacy of international humanitarian law, the municipal, civic and political withdrawal by Israel from the West Bank and East Jerusalem, and the removal of settlers from the West Bank or other solution by common agreement between the Knesset and an elected and representative Palestinian Government. But at all these events, ICAHD literature will also be offered for sale, being a major NGO in the field, combating human rights breaches by fighting back against the abhorrent practice of house demolitions of Palestinian homes.
