Making waves with radical radio

ben | 11.11.2007 16:09 | Culture | Free Spaces | Indymedia | Other Press | London

A long time ago, back in October 2004, an internet radio station was set up to provide independent coverage of the European Social Forum when it came to London. Streaming 24/7, rampART radio was a mix of independent news, spoken word, plus conscious and revolutionary tunes. Often, visiting guests would finds themselves dragged to the studio to tell of projects and struggles in their own areas. Occasionally there would be live streaming of the events happening at the social center or dedicated coverage of major mobilisations like the G8 or disarm DSEi.

rampART radio is no more but other collectives are using the studio to produce radical radio...

"Welcome to Dissident Island, a small republic off the coast of London. Inhabited by a motley crew of dissidents who spend most of their time playing with puppies and producing a radio show of some sort. On the first and third Friday of every month we are visited by an assortment of lovely people who will teach, entertain and generally brighten up our lives. In the first part of the show we will be serving up a mix of radio plays, info on upcoming actions, legal advice and whatever else is going on. We will also be supplying you with Djs playing dubstep, reggae, breakcore, drum and bass and maybe even a bit of hip hop. We hope you will visit us soon (every two weeks). Check this site for dates and times as well as links to previous shows." -

All the shows are archived. The show from 19th Oct featured an interview with indymedia videographer Oscar Beard and Greg from No Borders London. The show from Nov 2nd premiered the new radio play 'Bark' and Mika from Platform talked about the Oil and Gas industry.

The latest show was broadcast and recorded the discussion from the Foundry in London at the Indymedia Exhibition. The speakers covered media, 'why direct action?' and sustainable living at the climate camp and consensus decision making. This was followed by a discussion on topics such as how to encourage more people to get involved and ideas for the future.

Dissident Island Radio is one of two radio projects using the rampART studio at the moment. The other is Wireless FM ( http://www.wirelessfm.net/) which used to operate from Saint Agnes Place before it was evicted. If you'd like to use the studio, contact  rampart@mutualaid.org
