Bomb explosion in the D.C. Head Office in Providencia Santiago, Chile
8 Nov 2007
A Christian Democratic Party head office was hit last night when a bomb, planted by unknown persons, exploded, resulting in damage to the windows and the exterior, informed police and community sources.
The explosion occurred at midnight this Wednesday (03.00 today GMT), and affected party premises situated in the municipality of Santiaguino de Providencia, where it caused, moreover, alarm amongst local neighbours, said the chief of police Aladino Alfaro, who is in charge of the proceedings.
Pamphlets were found in the area - some in support of liberty for the Mapuche political prisoners, and others criticising the 'Concertacion for Democracy' - the coalition that has governed Chile since 1990 - of which the Christian Democratic Party is a part. They were found by the party member Jorge Burgos, who arrived at the affected premises to verify the damage.
Five Mapuche prisoner 'comuneros' have sustained a hunger strike for the last 29 days in prison in the city of Angol, 600 kilometres away from Santiago, in the southern region of La Araucania. They demand a revision of the judgement that convicted them and other imprisoned indigenous people.
A dispute has persisted in the area for some years between Mapuches that reclaim as their own, lands that belong principally to wood companies. Close to thirty indigenous 'comuneros' have been processed and convicted for seizure of property and other crimes related to the conflict.
The prisoners and social organisations that support them claim that the Mapuches have been processed under the anti-terrorist norms, which involve heavier penalties.
