Armistice Day: Protest and Film

Ian Cohen | 05.11.2007 15:41

On Armistice Day (Sunday, 11 November), there is a protest outside the Armed Forces Recruitment Centre near the Victoria Centre Clock Tower at 10:30am and, at 3:00pm in the Broadway Cinema, a film - The Last Atomic Bomb.

THE LAST ATOMIC BOMB

Something we should surely be reminded of on Remembrance Sunday - November 11th - is the death and devastation caused by the nuclear bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945. To this end, Nottingham CND is showing THE LAST ATOMIC BOMB, at the Broadway Cinema on the afternoon of Sunday November 11th.

The film starts at 3.00 pm with an introduction by John Hort (Member of Nottingham CND.) The ticket price from us is £2 plus any donation you may wish to make to help cover our costs. Please contact Diane Lunzer on 0115 9812034 or Jeremy Jago on 0115 9621453 if you would like a ticket.

Directed by Robert Richter, the film tells the story of 10-year-old Sakoe Shimohira, hiding in a shelter in Nagasaki near ground zero when the bomb fell, and the aftermath of that day. Her experiences are interwoven with documentary material about - among others - the US decision to use the bomb, censorship of its effects in the US and Japan, the build up of nuclear weapons during the Cold War, and today’s nuclear proliferation.

White Poppies

CND is also selling White Peace Poppies with all proceeds going to support the hospital in Jenin on the West Bank in Palestine . These are on sale at:-

The Malt Cross on St. James’s Street
The Sumac Centre
Roots in Sherwood
(and from Wednesday 7th November at the Broadway Cinema)

CND will also be on selling them along with tickets for the film at the Stop the War Protest outside the Armed Forces Recruitment Centre at 10.30am on Sunday 11th November.
