BNP Come Third in Sutton West.

Richard Buckwell | 02.11.2007 10:12

Yesterday the BNP came third in the Sutton in Ashfield West by-election for Ashfield District Council.

The full results are:

Liberals: 873 votes (37.0%)
Labour: 560 votes (23.7%)
BNP: 321 votes (13.6%)
Independent: 275 votes (11.7%)
Conservative: 257 votes (10.9%)
Green Party: 72 votes (3.1%)

2358 votes cast (about 29% turnout)

The vote for the BNP, though 321 too many, is well down on votes they got in the local elections in Kirkby in Ashfield in May where they just missed getting seats. Hopefully in good part due to comprehensive coverage of the ward by 5,000 Trades Council/Unite Against Fascism (UAF)leaflets. We had many trades council & local people involved in doing
this.

whilst i recently got involved in anti-BNP campaigning I haven't been along to any of the leafletting in Sutton and I just want to say a big thank you to those who did.

it feels like there is a really strong anti-fascist movement growing at the moment which is hugely encouraging.
