Human Shields Mobilise for Iran

Human Shield Action Iran | 01.11.2007 09:21

The Human Shield movement has returned. Thousands of volunteers prepare to travel to Iran to prevent illegitmate and misguided US military action

The Human Shield Movement today warned President Bush, Nicholas Sarkozy and Gordon Brown that any attempt at military intervention against Iran would be met by a massive mobilisation of human shields.

The human shields plan to travel to Tehran and position themselves around civilian infrastructure sites in order to try and prevent what they believe would be a catastrophic and unjustified attack on a sovereign nation. Whilst it is expected that most missiles will be directed at military installations the human shields are concerned that sites in the Iranian capital will also be targeted. Over 500 human shields from 14 countries have already pledged themselves to the mission and are currently in the latter stages of preparation in order to be ready to travel to Iran "at very short notice".

The Human Shield Movement gained global prominence in the 2003 when several hundreds Western civilians of all ages, backgrounds and nationalities descended on Iraq in an attempt to prevent the invasion. The movement has been out of hibernation since President Bush's State of the Union in Februrary 2005 and have been collecting pledges of people willing to go to Iran should an invasion look imminent.

Organisers hope that by organising early they will be able to mount a sizeable group of volunteers willing to try and stop a future destructive folly in the Middle East. The Human Shield Mission to Iraq only had a matter of weeks to organise before the start of 'Operation Shock and Awe' and as a result the number of human shields in Baghdad was not great enough to provide an effective deterrent.

Today, a powerfully-worded warning was sent to the White House, as well as letters to Gordon Brown and Nicholas Sarkozy to unequivocally distance themselves from the President's warmongering stance.

A spokesperson for the movement, Will Leasun said today;

"Travelling to Iran as human shields has always been seen as the 'last resort'. Unfortunately it seems that we fear are fast approaching the point when it will become necessary. The latest moves by President Bush imposing sanctions on Iran and labelling the Revolutionary Guard as terrorists combined with the increase in military spending, the build up of forces on the Iranian borders and the unverified and unverifiable claims being made against Iran have left us in little doubt that time is running out. Traditional methods of protest are ineffective in the face of the messianic determination of Bush and the neo-cons to implement their global vision.

We already have over 500 people who are sorting out their visa requirements and there are thousands of others who have pledged themselves as human shields and who will be ready to travel to Iran at short notice. None of us want to die but all of us are unwilling to sit by and wait for politicians and dipolmats to act on our behalf. It is up to each and every one of us to do everything in our power to save this planet from this dangerously misguided foreign policy. If you cannot join us because you have children and dependents then do something else but we appeal to everyone to do something."
