lloyd george statue comes clean
rikki | 27.10.2007 23:32 | SOCPA | Repression | London
there was a small chalk addition to the new lloyd george statue this afternoon. it attracted half a dozen 'heritage wardens', four community support officers, and several police. there were no arrests, but eventually the statue was cleaned.

heritage wardens also harassed brian haw and his supporters several times this evening before finally moving in and using force to move a tent off the grass once again. a letter from the GLA was handed over, threatening prosecution, but instead of doing this lawfully through the courts, once again ken livinstone's cronies resorted to bully-boy tactics.
one 'warden' was begging brian to move his tent as he did not want to have to follow his orders and use force. although some wardens inevitably like the power their role brings them, many are unhappy at being political pawns and bully boys for the government and 'red ken'.
the GLA have had well over a year to prosecute brian and co, and yet they have refused to deal with this lawfully through the courts. instead they bully and harass and lie.
even the 'evening standard' (not known for its liberal leanings) has asked what the real agenda is behind the GLA's posturing. andrew gilligan's opinion article can be read online at

whilst it is clearly a right wing attack on ken livingstone, it does raise some interesting points
the SOCPA legislation itself is apparently becoming virtually unenforceable, but the establishment is trying new tricks to keep the pressure up on peaceful protest in parliament square
if you're in town on monday evening and want to know more about the past history of the SOCPA saga, there will be a free screening of 'SOCPA - the movie' at the 'roxy bar and screen' on borough high street at 8pm. it is the first in a series of screenings of films about political violence organised by 'pocketvisions films'.
the film will be followed by a q&a session with the film-maker (rikki), mark barrett (one of the sunday picnic campaigners against the law), and barbara tucker (the one-woman socpa crime wave who has been reported more than a hundred times for socpa offences, and due to her peaceful one-woman banner protests has been endlessly attacked, arbitrarily detained, abused, harassed and intimidated by the authorities)
