29 10 07: "Warning, Contains Strong Language" - Documentary Season
The start of a six week season of Political Violence documentaries, curated by PocketVisions.
This short season of films cover conflicts past and present from Yugoslavia, Kurdistan, Israel, Mexico and even London. Independent Documentary filmmaking is flourishing around the world as more and more filmmakers pick up a camera to record and document issues, disputes and conflicts taking place every day.
Voices not otherwise heard, points of view not otherwise seen, these films are about "Neither victims, nor executioners." Curated by PocketVisions this is essential viewing to educate, enlighten, astonish, challenge and provoke.
All films will be followed by a panel discussion where possible including the film's director.
SOCPA - The Movie + Q&A with the Director Rikki Blue
An important new film about the (Serious Organised Crime and Police Act) legislation which was passed in order to get rid of Brian Haw, the lone protester who has camped outside Parliament for more than 6 years. His ever-increasing display of powerful and artistic banners challenged the politicians who voted for the invasion of Iraq. Last year police swooped and unlawfully removed most of his display, but he has continued his successful battle to remain outside Westminster,
The film shows the enormous creativity and tenacity of Brian and other campaigners appalled at the idea that we have to ask for permission to protest near Parliament.
Featuring an original music soundtrack and contributions from all the main players who have challenged this law. This film is at times frightening, funny, shocking and deeply-moving.
UK | 2007 | 60 mins | dir. Rikki Blue
