kiwi bird | 18.10.2007 19:09 | Repression
On the early morning of the 15th of october there were simultaneous raids across the North Island, in Auckland, Whakatane, Wellington, Ruatoki, and Hamilton. Later in the morning, Police came to at least four houses in Christchurch. Seventeen people have been arrested so far, and reports are that up to 60 are being sought for questioning.
The raids were under the Suppression Of Terrorism Act and the Firearms Act. They have been targetted at people involved in the Tino Rangatiratanga, Peace and Environmental movements.

Tino rangatiratanga

Self determination
As an anarchist I've always been impressed with the concept of tino rangatiratanga, which seems to encompass both personal and mass liberty as higher concepts than state law. Maybe it's just because they have such a cool red'n'black flag but the historical bloody usurpment of Maori land by the British epitomises colonialism.
