kiwi bird | 18.10.2007 19:09 | Repression

Police raid houses across Aotearoa under anti-terrorism legislation, at least a dozen arrests.

On the early morning of the 15th of october there were simultaneous raids across the North Island, in Auckland, Whakatane, Wellington, Ruatoki, and Hamilton. Later in the morning, Police came to at least four houses in Christchurch. Seventeen people have been arrested so far, and reports are that up to 60 are being sought for questioning.

The raids were under the Suppression Of Terrorism Act and the Firearms Act. They have been targetted at people involved in the Tino Rangatiratanga, Peace and Environmental movements.

Is this really "repression"?

Was this in any way perhaps related to the article published in the 16th October edition of "The Times"?  http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/article2666521.ece

Tino rangatiratanga

Self determination
Self determination

There can be little doubt that this is police repression when the latest search warrants were on a pensioner, an organic farmer and a banking reformer - hardly extremists - and they were so unnecessarily destructive. Having met so many 'right on' activist Kiwis in my time, and admired New Zealands non-nuclear policy, I was surprised to learn that the country is fairly backward or right wing in many political and social respects.

As an anarchist I've always been impressed with the concept of tino rangatiratanga, which seems to encompass both personal and mass liberty as higher concepts than state law. Maybe it's just because they have such a cool red'n'black flag but the historical bloody usurpment of Maori land by the British epitomises colonialism.
