the gla and police are removing most of the tents - i think they are leaving some shelter for brian, but not for any supporters

there is no legal process in this action

once again they will eventually be found to have acted unlawfully

but in the meantime, brute force wins out

What about the reseeding?

17.10.2007 18:01

GLA claimed the fence was there to allow reseeding of the grass, which was supposed to take place sometime before the end of November. Was this just an excuse to keep the fence up?

21:00 Update

17.10.2007 23:12

As of 9pm this eve, very battered tents have been set up best as possible on the pavement. It will be a very uncomfortable night for the people sleeping there, the temperature is very cold in the square and will be made worse by sleeping on paving slabs.

No police left in the Square, but approx. 7 GLA are guarding the grassy area. They are taking it in turns to warm up in two posh cars at the back of the square.

A worn out John McDonell MP visited Brian at about 8:30pm. John read the eviction notice and spotted a comment about a bylaw*. So calling their bluff, under this bylaw John will be applying for permission for the Parliament Square Peace Campaign to continue on the grass. He should also have an EDM ready for Friday. Brian also pointed out that there never seemed to be any problems with bylaws when the pro fox hunters camped in the square.

There was also news that a group of bus drivers from Bradford who were passing at the time of the eviction made an excellent stand against the GLA bouncers. Unfortunately they had to get back to Bradford so could not stay for long, but were described as being like the cavalry arriving!

*Forget the details exactly, but the eviction notice said permission under aforesaid bylaw was not granted for tents on the grass.
