Nottingham Transition Town group forming

strengthen our communities | 10.10.2007 09:15

Transition Nottingham is in its nascent stages, with an initial group forming to launch in the New Year. There will be a meeting to decide the constitution on 18th October, at 7.30 at the ICC, Mansfield Rd. Anyway who is prepared to put in work to get Transition Nottingham off the ground is welcome! Meetings are the 1st and 3rd Thursdays of the month, same time, same place, after this.

Transition towns are towns, cities, villages, and neighbourhoods which have decided to face the twin problems of climate change and peak oil proactively. They are creating energy decent plans for their locality, looking at all areas of life, and trying to initiate practical steps towards a low carbon future.

Peak oil (the point where oil production starts declining as reserves start to dwindle) is expected very soon. At the same time, global demand for oil is constantly rising. There will be a point where we can no longer rely on oil to supply cheap energy, and this will demand changes all through our lives. Whether it is for transport, food or healthcare, we have come to rely on cheap oil in almost every corner of our lives. The end of cheap oil could cause catastrophe, yet facing it proactively means that we will have models and ideas to work from.

Get involved! The first stages are awareness raising about the problem. Do you think you can help? Do you have a group which would welcome a speaker about peak oil and climate change? Get in touch!
