Local campaign group Manchester NO2ID this week welcomed the Home Office's lightly-publicised National Identity Fraud Protection Week, and called upon the Government to take action to prevent ID fraud by scrapping the expensive, pointless National Identity Scheme and instead buying every household in the UK a cross-cut shredder.
Co-ordinator Dave Page said "The Government's own website doesn't mention how compulsory ID cards might protect people against ID fraud. Putting everybody's details on central databases, accessible by increasing numbers of civil servants, merely creates a rich target for criminals at vast public expense."
The Government's own figures show that even in the safest parts of the country, over 60% of households routinely throw away credit card statements and other valuable information. Compulsory ID cards will not protect against this; buying every household a shredder will be cheaper, simpler, and reduce rather than increase the risk of ID fraud.
"Identity theft causes misery to its victims and has a large impact on our economy. It's time the Government stopped shamelessly hijacking the issue to waste money on useless plastic and started taking real steps to address the problem."
