GROUP DESCRIPTION : This newsletter is produced by Bristol Stop-The-War Coalition to publicise events & activities in opposition to the so-called 'war on terror'. We are composed of groups & individuals with a wide variety of political & religious views. We are politically non-aligned, but we are also committed to oppose any racist backlash. Bristol STW is not a 'membership' organisation. Any one or group opposed to the 'war on terror' can consider themselves part of Bristol STW, or can continue to be publicised by us while choosing to organise independently of the Coalition. We don't claim (or seek) a monopoly over anti-war sentiment & activity in the city & recognise that many groups & individuals have their own ways of opposing the 'war on terror'. We are also dependent on individual donations for our funding, so if you are able to make a donation please send a cheque or postal order, payable to: Bristol Stop The War Coalition. EDITORIAL : OVER 1 MILLION DEAD! ‘STUFF HAPPENS’
Jeremy Clarke of Bristol-Stop-The-War writes: “Today the banned Stop The War demonstration took place in central London (8th October), calling for all British troops to be withdrawn from Iraq now - a demand supported by well over half the population & large sections of the army. To further its own agenda the government is quick to support demonstrations overseas, but hypocritically bans them at home.
Gordon Brown has spent the last 3 months attempting to distance himself from Tony Blair’s adventures in Iraq while staying within the limits of what the USA will let him do. The result is that 5000 British soldiers are camped out at Basra airport waiting until George Bush lets them leave. Deeply unpopular with Iraqis & recognising that their mission had ended in failure, the British army wanted to leave its base in central Basra in April but the U.S wouldn’t let them. Between April & September, when they did finally move to the airport, nearly 30 soldiers were killed purely to provide cover for Bush’s failed policy.
Despite all the speculation there will not now be a general election in November, no doubt one issue that Gordon Brown took into account was the deep unpopularity of the occupation of Iraq with voters. At the last election MPs who had backed the invasion in 2003 lost many votes & the government’s majority slumped. Whenever the election is called, the Stop The War Coalition will ensure that candidates have to answer the questions they would rather avoid about the occupations of Iraq & Afghanistan, & the threats to attack Iran.
In Iraq reports suggest the death toll since the invasion has risen to over a million (see below) & resistance to the occupation continues despite Bush’s ‘surge’. As Donald Rumsfeld once famously said ‘Stuff happens’. The US government is still trying to force the Iraqi government to pass a law handing over control of oil reserves to multi-national companies. Bristol Stop The War hope to organise a meeting with the ‘Hands Off Iraqi Oil’ campaign in November –. See Section 10e for their National Tour.” Link:  http://www.HandsOffIraqiOil.org

01) IRAQ STUDY : 1,220,580 MURDERED SINCE INVASION
Links:  http://www.opinion.co.uk/Newsroom_details.aspx?NewsId=78 &  http://195.158.192.26/munqeth
“In the week in which General Patraeus reported back to US Congress on the impact the ‘surge’ is having in Iraq, a new poll revealed that more than 1,000,000 Iraqi citizens have been murdered since the invasion took place in 2003. Previous estimates, most noticeably the Lancet in Oct 2006, suggested almost half this number (654,965 deaths). These findings come from a poll released today by Opinion Business Research (ORB), the British polling agency that has been tracking public opinion in Iraq since 2005. Interviews conducted August 12th – 19th 2007. ORB is a full member of the British Polling Council and abides by its rules.
A representative sample of 1,499 adults aged 18+ answered the following question: Q) How many members of your household, if any, have died as a result of the conflict in Iraq since 2003 (ie: as a result of violence rather than a natural death)? None 78%, One 16%, Two 5%, Three 1%, Four or more 0.002%. Given that from the 2005 census there are a total of 4,050,597 households this data suggests 1,220,580 deaths since the invasion. Calculating the margin of error we believe the range is a minimum of 733,158 to a maximum of 1,446,063
Detailed analysis indicates almost one in two households in Baghdad have lost a family member, significantly higher than in any other area of the country. The governorates of Diyala (42%) & Ninewa (35%) were next. The poll also questioned surviving relatives on the method in which their loved ones were killed. It reveals that 48% died from a gunshot wound, 20% from the impact of a car bomb, 9% from aerial bombardment, 6% as a result of an accident & 6% from another blast/ordnance. This is significant because more often that not it is car bombs & aerial bombardments that make the news – with gunshots rarely in the headlines.
As well as a murder rate that now exceeds the Rwanda genocide from 1994 (800,000 murdered), not only have more than one million been injured but our poll calculates that of the millions of Iraqis that have fled their neighbourhoods, 52% have moved within Iraq, but 48% have crossed its borders, with Syria taking the bulk of refugees. For those left in Iraq, although 81% may describe the availability of basic groceries such as bread & fresh vegetables as ‘very/fairly good’, more than one in two (54%) consider them to be ‘expensive’.”

02) PLEDGE AGAINST ATTACK ON IRAN + CLUSTER BOMBS

2a) THE PLEDGE: We the undersigned call on the government to actively oppose plans for an attack on Iran. We believe that any attack on Iran would be a disaster for the ordinary people of that country & would massively increase instability across the Middle East & beyond. In the event of escalation towards an attack we pledge to join a national campaign of action & civil disobedience, including city & town centre sitdowns, work stoppages & college & school walkouts. We also pledge on the day of any attack to join lunchtime protests & walkouts in workplaces, schools & colleges & mobilise for local protests in towns & cities across the country.

"Blair accused ‘the Iranian regime’ of ‘backing, financing, arming & supporting terrorism in Iraq.’ He offered no evidence, the MoD has none. This is the same Goebbels-like refrain which brought epic bloodletting to Iraq. Bush & Blair spent 4 years preparing an onslaught that is about oil, rather than non-existent nuclear weapons."

2b) CLUSTER BOMBS CAUSE CARNAGE: SIGN THE PETITION: In the week beginning 20 August, 3 people in Lebanon were killed by cluster bombs left over from the Israeli attack in 2006. 3 people were injured. The weapon is designed to scatter hundreds of small bombs across a 50 metre area. It has been condemned by many organisations, including the Oslo Conference on Cluster Munitions to which Britain is a signatory, as a cause of 'unacceptable harm to civilians'. Britain's position? Des Browne, Defence Secretary, described the M85 & similar weapons as 'legitimate wepons with significant military value'. Sign the petition to demand an end to the production & stock-piling of M85 Cluster bomb munitions. Civilians constitute 98% of cluster bomb casualties. 04) UNSAFE NUCLEAR APPLICATION @ AWE BURGHFIELD
Link:  http://www.aldermaston.net/campaigns/tng/alerts/198 “The MoD have submitted a planning application for a new facility at AWE Burghfield (part of AWE Aldermaston) where warheads for the current Trident missiles system are assembled. The facility is for manufacturing the non-nuclear components of a warhead. An article published in New Scientist (19/09/07) reveals Burghfield has been struggling to remedy more than 300 safety defects. It has only been allowed to remain open because the Ministry of Defence says the work is vital.”

SAFETY RISKS: *Risk 1 - radiation: HM Inspectors have been consulted on this application, which suggests there is a radiation risk. *Risk 2 - explosion: The Land Contamination Statement states contamination has been found, & there is a ‘high’ risk of explosion during excavation. *Risk 3 - contamination: the redundant buildings may have contaminated the ground, & both surface & groundwater is at risk. *Risk 4 - radioactive waste. No indication is given in the application about the storage on site of low-level radioactive waste materials from redundant buildings & excavated materials.*Risk 5 – flooding: in light of the recent floods what precautions have been taken in planning drainage, as mercury - has contaminated the groundwater in the past.
WHAT YOU CAN DO: “Please write to the Planning Officer (details below). Your objections should be on ‘planning’ grounds (visual appearance of building, environmental impact, traffic management etc). While legal, moral & safety grounds are not grounds for objection, they have been noted previously. We are asking everyone to call for a public inquiry, on the grounds that sufficient detailed information about the serious risks to health & safety involved in the preparation of the site for construction has not been provided.”
PLEASE WRITE TO: Email:  cinwards@westberks.gov.uk or  planapps@westberks.gov.uk (Quoting Application Number: 07/01686/COMIND). Clive Inwards, Senior Planning Officer. Council Offices, Market St, Newbury RG14 5LD. Tel: 01635 519111 Fax: 01635 519408. Expiry for Standard Consultation: 09/11/07.

05) AWE ALDERMASTON BLOCKADE + RELATED : 12th November

5a) AWE ALDERMASTON BLOCKADE:  http://www.blockthebuilders.org.uk Mon 12th Nov (near Reading). "A major blockade of the Aldermaston nuclear weapons factory. Work on the Orion laser - a key facility for the future of Britain's WMD project - is well underway. The AWE (Atomic Weapons Establishment) is reported to be developing a new nuclear warhead. The device, designated the High Surety Warhead is understood to be underdevelopment in conjunction with the US who want modernised ‘failsafe’ nuclear firepower for its submarine-launched Trident missiles. Overnight accommodation available Sunday. This is a day of non-violent direct action. Legal support on the day. Info pack on website. Call 07807 522454.
5b) ALDERMASTON WOMEN’S PEACE CAMP: 12th - 14th Oct & 9th - 11th Nov. “Established in 1985, the camp remains a symbol of resistance. We are currently campaigning against new developments at Aldermaston, which will allow the UK government to build a new generation of nuclear weapons. Aldermaston has many unpleasant features, including ‘toxic spots’ (from dumpings/accidents), chemical contamination of parts of the site, & a large store of radioactive waste. The next camp will be Fri 12 - Sun 14 Oct. We are camping opposite on the verge opposite our normal site at Dingly Dell after our escapade with the byelaws. November camp (Fri 9 - Sun 11 Nov) will include a silent ‘Remember & Resist’ vigil at 11am on Sun 11 Nov at Main Gate. Please join us, & please wear black if you can.” Contact: AWPC, 157 Lyndhurst Rd, Worthing, W Sussex BN11, UK. M: 07969 739 812 Email:  info@aldermaston.net Web:  http://www.aldermaston.net
5c) RELATED NEWS:  http://www.faslane365.org “At least 171 people were arrested for taking non-violent direct action at the home of Britain’s Trident nuclear weapons submarines, Faslane, Scotland. The 1st October ‘Big Blockade’ was the culmination of the year-long ‘Faslane 365’ series of protests.”

06) GLOBAL POLL SHOWS UK WANT NUCLEAR FREE WORLD
Links:  http://www.cnduk.org/pages/press/070919.htm &  http://www.icanw.org “Global poll shows UK public wants nuclear-free world, not new weapons: A new global poll, comparing opinion in Britain, France, Italy, Germany, the US & Israel provides compelling new evidence of a public demand for the government to push for the complete elimination of nuclear weapons. Only 0.9% of Britons say the government's goal should be the development of new nuclear weapons. Earlier this year the Government opted to go ahead with the renewal of the Trident nuclear missile submarines. The poll, ‘Global Public Opinion on Nuclear Weapons’, produced by The Simons Foundation of Vancouver, Canada, questioned 1,000 people in each country.
Other findings include: *Over 90% support for eliminating (50.9%) or reducing (39.7%) global nuclear stockpiles. *A huge majority (73.4%) believing nuclear weapons make the world more dangerous. *85% support for a global ban on nuclear weapons. *Over 80% supporting a ban on weapons being placed in space.
Kate Hudson, Chair of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, said ‘When less than 1% of the public think the goal of British nuclear weapons policy should be the development of new bombs, it is absurd for the Government to replace Trident whilst dismissing calls for negotiations on the draft Nuclear Weapons Convention lodged at the UN. The government, again, is woefully out of step with British public opinion. CND, along with a growing number of states, wants to see serious work on this treaty which would place nuclear weapons - alongside biological & chemical weapons - banned by international law.’ CND is part of ICAN (the International Campaign To Abolish Nuclear Weapons), launched by International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War which calls for such a convention.”
