Americans under Siege: The Fall of the American Empire

It’s time for a kick down in America. When a country forgets to take care of its own people, ignores the immense poverty between its own borders, shuts down even the faintest whisper of free speech, and demonizes whole races, it needs an enema.
Do you hear that sound? That’s the sound of the American dollar crashing to the ground. That whoosh you just heard? That was the sound of foreign investors pulling their money out of the country. And the other sound? That tight, hollow sound and the rush of feet? That’s the sound of the richest 1% of Americans who own over 40% of the assets in this country as they tighten their sphincters and run with the money out the door. It’s not unusual for the richest of the rich to bolt with their investments while the rest of the country suffers. Disheartening, maybe, unusual, no.
The perpetual whizzing sound that fills our everyday lives? That’s the sound of the few civil liberties we have left flying out the door. We hardly notice it any more. Tazor someone on a bus? That’s okay. Thank god it wasn’t me they got. Attack Iran? Well, I guess if they truly are evil then we should take them down. Aren’t all Moslems evil? Aren’t all people from Middle Eastern countries evil? Extremely doubtful, but the American government certainly seems to think so. It’s not like we really know what’s happening over there anyway. The media here long ago abdicated its job of reporting in the public interest to worship the almighty dollar. Which is not so mighty now as the Canadian dollar overtakes it, the British pound clobbers it into the ground, and the Euro jumps up the financial rungs daily. In fact, aren’t the world markets thinking about pegging themselves to the Euro now instead of the dollar?
And let’s not forget the wailing that acts as background noise here. We like to ignore it around these parts -- in the most powerful nation in the world. It’s the sound of the millions of men, women, and children in America suffering from easily curable diseases. They don’t have insurance or money, so they just have to keep hacking and hoping that someone will notice how sick this country really is.
It’s clear. We have reached the end of an empire here. It’s over. Only most Americans don’t seem to notice what’s happened. It’s like we have collective amnesia or a case of patent denial. Or is it that Americans truly don’t know what’s going on? Maybe the infotainment that parades around as news and the government propaganda dressed as objective truth isn’t really telling the whole story.
No matter. It’s time for a kick down in this nation. When a country forgets to take care of its own people, ignores the immense poverty between its own borders, shuts down even the faintest whisper of free speech, and demonizes whole races, it needs an enema. Too bad the enema that’s starting here is washing out the poorest of the poor first and many of the ones who caused the problem will escape unscathed -- with their fists full of newly procured Euros and British pounds. Because, after all, it is “every man for himself” in this land of equal opportunity, isn’t it?
* And I’m not putting my name on this because I don’t want to end up in Guantanamo Bay along with all of the other suspected terrorists who have been held there without legal recourse. Of course, the American government can and probably is reading my email and checking what internet sites I’m visiting because that’s how we roll these days in this paragon of democracy.
