'the Climate Camp hijacked by liberals...'

Shift | 05.10.2007 18:48 | Analysis

...argues a new zine! Shift aims to make a contribution to radical naval gazing with analysis of G8 and Climate Camp mobilisations. The approach is simple: capitalism is more than just 'us' versus 'them'. So you won't find any articles slagging off George Bush or Coca Cola in our pages.

The very first issue of Shift includes articles about right-wing anti-capitalism, the short sightedness of the anti-G8 protests and a discussion of Living Marxism/Spiked Online's handling of science.

It will be available from social centres soon but you can order by going to our website www.shiftmag.co.uk.

The editorial is already online.

C02?

05.10.2007 22:16

The editorial on the page referenced above refers to C02, presumably what is meant is CO2 though this is not an uncommon mistake.

The basic problem with the climate camp is illustrated by the reality....

06.10.2007 04:55

...that people who attend the camp are not waking up fully as human beings - as anarchists. This is the key to stopping the rape of the Mother Earth, as anyone who was 'green' 10 year ago will know - the conscious change comes first. At a deeper level - the peace convoy green anarchist type reality, we are talking about a new collective consciousness that is true freedom that people experience as a result of liberation/transcendance. This 'new' state of consciousness, of collective anarchy, is a karmic trap for the 'old age' police state reality. This again, is the key, I recall this quite clearly from the peace convoy days - the reality of the peace convoy represents/is an empowered/liberated reality that is a karmic trap to the state (which is based upon unfreedom and ritual abuse.) It would, of course, be quite difficult to foculise a collective new reality in this way in the context of the climate camp/eco protests. Tell me about it in fact! (was mostly unconsciously I think attempting to do this at the North Wales based Ethinog protest 10 years ago.) BECAUSE, if you can foculise an Exodus type trip in this community wide context you break the power (of the state), and reveal entirely new consciousness empowerment etc, on a community wide basis, (again that is a karmic trap to the power abusers of the state/government)....and, it seems, for people like Geroge Monbiot. (Guardian world) Yes karma yoga (good works) is necessary, but within the context (for example) of a government compliant program? - would never truly work to achive the aims (of reducing carbon, or improving society etc), because the state has to be broken and a new consciousness/reality manifested - the guidance circle or whatever - in order to do any real work. This is what those perverted lying scum in government etc don't realise usually - that their blagging bullshiting egos will face instant karma which will be a truely unbeliveably nightmare trip for these fucking flidth....and for us, instant karma is, of course, liberation. Instant karma is a nightmare for these blightypervs BECAUSE their indentity is intimately linked to the way that the bwitish state is made which is, I've very very sorry to have to enlighten you, ritual child abuse. This is why 'they' are such total and complete fucking scum. Now forget the fucking workshops, lets have some punk techno hardcore on the sound system and break out the recreational LSD, cannabis and brew and have a free party ter-do! (oh god no that reality... which is a nightmare increasing at an increasing rate for the blightyprickmasonskitz). This is an intellenctual reality - to make this magic happen in reality in the community around you is another thing though.

Jah Bless

What kind of confusing Shift is This? - Que Hora, Que Hora

06.10.2007 06:35

I feel either the Shitf editorial team just don’t really understand what fascism is, or they are misguided, or they are, less worringly, deliberately trying to destabilize using crude propaganda.

This view that fascism is hostile to capitalism is held by capitalist supporting faux lefts, and of course neoliberals. Simply equating anti-capitalists and fascists goes back a long way and serves nothing more than malign capitalist propaganda.

Fascism is capitalism or more precisely a regulatory model of capitalism; it is in a sense a higher form of capitalism than the neoliberal regulatory model, which was a higher for than the Keynesian/Breton woods contructed social democratic model that was set up after the Second World War, which went on to fail spectacularly in the 70´s.

The regulatory model fails because of the contradictions within capitalism, not least the concentration of huge amounts of accumulated capital in the hands of monoplies and a few.

So facism is merely a regulatory model of capitalism to increase stability. The neoconservatives are facists, but they have this time been beaten back, not least because of the the resistance in Iraq and the resistance to the war against Iraq, and wars against Iran. If they hadn´t the neoconsrvative fascists would still be running the US and probably coming to power her by now. So the resistance in Iraq and to the war against Iraq has beaten back nascent facsim in the guise of neoconservatism, which would have spread from the US to these shores, and around Europe.

The US neocons was/is a serious project to put fascists into power and keep them there. They failed, bedcause the resistance to them was prolonged, deep and global.

The anti-war movement and anti-capitalist movement is and has accieved this: a huge thing really, and I am sure will continue to do more : it is a power in the land that gives hope. The fascist will come back again, because neoliberal capitalism isn´t working; they need a fascist regulatory system next to drive down wages and create a class of slaves - yes, just like Rome.

Maybe we should have a virtual workshop on what next for the anti-capitalist movement. Encouraging signs are our dog Lulu who is waiting patiently for her morning walk in the country has just joined the anti-capitalist movement. She has specifically asked to be in the anti-fascist dog army. Quite promising or what! .

Or better, why not have a secret meeting in the pyranesees next year, to plot to overthrow capitalism in it´s theoretic sense. Kids and dogs welcome of course..

Make Neoliberal-Capitalism Illegal (again); Don´t Legalize Fasicst-Capitalism

06.10.2007 09:09

Bear in mind, Jah Bless, that Climate camps are for putting a stop to climate change, and perhaps developing tactics and strategy for changing the system that causes climate change.

Additionally, I’d hope to go to practice and develop techniques for living sustainably, and to have a good time too,, interact in a socially useful and enjoyable way that is sometimes difficult to do in the capitalists sphere; and maybe even go a little way to work out and actually work to challenge the oppression of the state through its political police force. Well, that’s what I might want to do; however, sometimes you just forget and have a good time.

But I try to remember that not everyone’s taste in music is the same, so imposing a techno-punk bash on everyone at a climate camp might not be a great idea, and also you need to take into account that it gives the police the opportunity to raid it and close it down, but I certainly don’t think that the personal outcome of a good rocky with the coppers is altogether a bad thing, as long as you are prepared for it, and precautions are taken to protect the more vulnerable, like children.

At the G8 protests there’s always a techno punk bash going on somewhere. I enjoyed one such event very much in the early hours of one morning at the French G8, so you tastes are already catered for.

Personally, this week, I have preferred a little of the Clash, Hendrix, Vaughan Williams, Mano Chao, Coltrane or Becker, when I have wanted a little inspiration and enjoyment. Maybe some techno punk tonight; at low volume though because the neighbours might call the police; and I’d wake the baby up It horses for courses, and for my part, I try not to heavily impose my tastes on others … but I am always open to new sounds. – in theory anyway.

Now, turning to another matter I would recommend reading A Brief History of Neoliberalism by David Harvey which I read a few years ago. This guy´s as good as Chomsky really.

 http://www.us.oup.com/us/catalog/general/subject/Politics/PoliticalTheory/ContemporaryPoliticalThought/?view=usa&ci=9780199283262

I think it is a valuable contribution to the debate and the way forward for the THOSE WHO WANT Another World. I am sure others have similar recommendations of books ideas, and things to do.

The summary at the end talks about that the combined work of anti-capitalist activist academics, environmental and other campaigners, is the only realistic way to bring about radical change – I would have to agree with him. UNITY of Action or barbarism. I have always believed this to be the case.

I would suggest, too, a European meeting in the Pyraneese next year. perhaps under the Banner of: Make Fascist Capitalism and Neoliberal Capitalism IIlegal.

Thatcher went a long way to make neoliberal capitalism legal in Britain then Blair used his democratic dictatorship to continue legalising it.

Bush and the Neocons started to try and legalise Fasscist capitalism in the US. Look at some of the work of John Pilger, it reinforces this, and others too. Hitler made Fascist capitalism legal in Germany. he was a little premature, because it challenged the power and wealth of the elites of the other form of capitalism dominant in the world - which had collapsed dramatically in the 30´s - at the time, and it wa a direct challenge to imperialist Britain. You have to remember that capitalist nations compete with each other, so you get war. The US had the power after the 2WW to impose its model of capitalist regulation on the capitalist world, liberal/social democratic capitalism along side the progression of imperialism

The Climate camp was great for picking up women!

06.10.2007 11:32

By the way the climate camp was great for picking up women as there were so many good looking women there, especially at the parties in the evening in the giant marquee. I managed to get three womens phone numbers and several hugs and kisses from many of the women there. By the way there is tons of information on picking up women here:  http://www.bristollair.com/

freely available analysis would be more useful

Sounds like SHIFT have some really interesting contributions to make. The debate around Climate Camp's informal hierarchies and middle-class leanings in particular.

Wouldn't your articles be of more use to the movement if they were freely available on the net?
Those who want hard copies could still be charged.

At least consider putting the climate camp articles online; the future of the climate movement is this country is still very much up for grabs and interventions like this could make a real difference.
