Anti-Total protest in Oxford

- | 02.10.2007 18:45 | Anti-militarism | Repression | Oxford

Activists staged a protest at Total petrol station on Oxford Road in Oxford on Saturday. They tried to block the access to the station but were low on numbers and unfortunately the immediate police presence meant that they were moved to one side. Still, the large banner sent out a clear message about Total Oil’s support of the Burmese junta to lots of motorists on the busy Saturday afternoon. Many indicated to turn in before changing their minds. Those who chose to refill their tanks were handed leaflets and given a lecture on the situation in Burma and Total’s decision to exploit it.

I’ve also noticed some anti-Total graffiti about.

why I think targetting companies is more effective

06.10.2007 10:07

We can have a much greater impact by targeting the companies involved directly
than by politely trying to persuade our local politicians to persuade other politicians
to persuade the junta to stop its brutality. The urgency and passion of the message
gets lost as it filters through so many layers of politicians with vested interests.

Having said all that, good luck to those marching in London today. I don't personally
believe its a particularly effective tactic, but our aims are the same and we're 100%
on the same side.

pincer movement

07.10.2007 00:40

I agree that targeting companies is the most effective thing we can do at the moment as activists.

Having said that, putting pressure on the UK government to support EU trade sanctions on Burma is also worth doing as then Total would have to pull out. However, Total lobbies the French government strongly to block these. But if we can make Total and the French government feel the heat enough, they will have to back down and allow them through. Sarkozy has already been forced to call for French companies to halt new investments (largely meaningless, but shows they are feeling some pressure). Great action!

Set up a Burma Action Group in Oxford

08.10.2007 23:16

There's been plenty of warm vibes about having a meeting to set up a group and decide on new demonstrations. So here it is!

When: Saturday 13th, 12 noon
Where: The OARC - Upstairs in the East Oxford Community Centre:
Princes St, Oxford, OX4 1HU
 http://www.theoarc.org.uk/

Map:  http://maps.google.com/maps?q=Oxford,++OX4+1HU,+UK+(East+Oxford+Community+Centre,+Princes+St.)&hl=en

If people are up for it, the first demonstration could take place immediately afterwards.

Please tell anyone else you think may be interested - the more popular the group becomes, the more benefit we can be to the freedom struggle in Burma.

If anyone has any questions, by all means Email me.
