Setting up the Gatwick No Border Camp

IMCistas | 20.09.2007 00:16 | No Border Camp 2007 | Migration | South Coast

About 40 or so people arrived at the new site on Sunday afternoon to start set up. Time was of the essence: since the previous site had fallen through following police harassment of the landowner, the organisers wished to establish their presence as soon as possible and to set up the big structures. The structures had been collected from various other collectives around the country, many of which have been used for other camps. Soon the camp began to look rather familiar to the more seasoned camper!

Police took a day to find the camp and did not arrive until Monday afternoon. They took even longer to tell each other about the camp. One activist waiting at the previous site for participants who hadn't heard of the move was quizzed by the Surrey police about the location of the camp, and threatened to take her in for questioning. "Where is the camp.. tell us.. we know you know," they said. But their attitude changed when they learnt that the Sussex police were already at the camp but hadn't told them. In fact the change of location off-footed the police: while the Surrey police had long prepared their policing of the camp, the Sussex police hadn't had this luxury – it was almost as if we had planned it!

Food for the setter-uppers was provided by the 1 in 12 Collective from Bradford. But now the site has opened the Anarchist Teapot has taken on the feeding of the camp. 1 in 12 will provide snacks and food during the actions outside the camp.

Brilliant

Brilliant. Given Julie Spence's comments yesterday (the cheif cuntstable of cambridgeshire) demanding more money for policing immigrants (cos its all them committing the crimes apparently), you'd think they would have better things to do with police officers than to send them to the camp! Looking forward to coming down at the weekend. And keep warm.

no more immigration!!

Why the hell would anyone want 'no borders'? Great, millions more acres of Britain's green space going under concrete to provide roads, supermarkets and houses for these people, who from what I can see bring no benefit whatsoever to this country. It depresses me greatly as I see how this country is going with millions of immigrants, both legal and illegal, flooding here. Perhaps you will all have a different point of view when the inevitable consequence of this hits home. We'll see just how 'no borders' you are then!

And no, I am not a racist - I don't want anyone else coming to live here, whatever their nationality or colour. I am a realist who can see how Britain is changing for the worse because of neo-labour's gutless refusal to end this madness.

Nor am I unsympathetic to the plight of millions those around the world who are suffering and would like to come here, and as such I would be happy for a government to do all they could to help sort out the problems of these countries. It is the only way possible - uncontrolled immigration is unsustainable in this small country.

Though I suppose you will all start to get hot under the collar I suspect that the majority feel this way also. Shame we've all been convinced that it's so terribly un-PC to say so. Wake up for God's sake!
