Poll: More Americans Support Iraq Occupation and Mass Murder

A recent Wall Street Journal-NBC News poll “suggests” Bush “may have a little more maneuvering room at a critical point in debates over war costs and troop levels... The poll shows an uptick in support for the president’s handling of the war as well as a small increase in the proportion of Americans who believe the troop surge is helping and that victory remains possible.”

If we can trust the numbers cranked out by the War Street Journal and NBC-GE, the coming attack directed against Iran—next week, next month, certainly before the decider-commander guy leaves office—will not be a cakewalk, but rather a piece of cake, as the American people are easily swayed, or at least half of them are, by neocon manufactured “new realities” enthusiastically marketed by a corporate media with a vested interest in continued mass murder and misery.

A recent Wall Street Journal-NBC News poll “suggests” Bush “may have a little more maneuvering room at a critical point in debates over war costs and troop levels.” Not much, mind you, but enough for the War Street Journal to brag about. “As Mr. Bush prepares to follow congressional testimony by the top general in Iraq, David Petraeus, with a televised speech to the nation tonight, the poll shows an uptick in support for the president’s handling of the war as well as a small increase in the proportion of Americans who believe the troop surge is helping and that victory remains possible.” As WSJ admits, television, if choreographed right, can produce expected, if modest results. “The slight improvement in Iraq sentiment followed extensive news coverage anticipating the testimony of Gen. Petraeus and U.S. Ambassador to Iraq Ryan Crocker.”

“The proportion of Americans who say the war remains winnable has edged up to 37% from 32% in July, while the majority who say it isn’t has diminished to 56% from 62%. The proportion saying the troop surge is helping the situation on the ground has risen to 33% from 29% in July and 24% in April.” In short, a tad over half of all Americans, or at least those polled by Democrat pollster Peter Hart and Republican “counterpart” Neil Newhouse, have accepted reality while nearly 40 percent are mired in the manufactured reality of Bushzarro world. Of course, this should be expected because, as a senior adviser to Bush stated in 2002, we are “an empire now, and when we act, we create our own reality. And while you’re studying that reality—judiciously, as you will—we’ll act again, creating other new realities, which you can study too, and that’s how things will sort out. We’re history’s actors … and you, all of you, will be left to just study what we do.” Naturally, as for the American people, they will not study anything. Instead, the neocon reality—up is down and an occupation army can “surge” to victory—will be presented via the electronic hearth, a general or two will be marched out, and the people—or nearly 40 percent of them, if we are to believe the War Street Journal and NBC, owned by death merchant General Electric—will flip in acquiescence like tiddlywinks.

“The poll shows that American sentiment about the war is complex. Asked about possible outcomes, just 24% say U.S. troops should leave only after Iraq becomes a stable democracy. Yet just 26% say troops should start leaving now regardless of conditions on the ground. A 37% plurality says some troops should remain in the region long term to prevent violence from spreading.”

Iraq will never become a “stable democracy,” whatever that is exactly. Iraq was invaded, illegally and perniciously, and its civilian infrastructure methodically destroyed—in ruins to this day—precisely as planned. Again, nearly 40 percent, a “plurality” of television watchers and stepford citizens believe, thanks to incessant fantasy land programming courtesy of Fox News and CNN, troops recycled in to endless tours of duty will “remain in the region long term,” that is to say indefinitely and never mind what the Iraqis want—or for that matter, what the American people want. Of course, it hardly matters what Joe and Jane Sixpack want, as the neocons will continue with their plan regardless, same as Tommy Ray Glatman did whatever he wanted after invading the minds of hapless victims in the movie Dreamscape. As the War Street Journal and NBC-GE death merchant poll indicates, most Americans have absolutely no concept of the “reality on the ground” in Iraq—or anywhere else for that matter—never mind the neocon reality artificially created.

Only 34 percent of polled Americans have their druthers, while nearly half are seriously and dangerously deluded, actually holding out hope the occupation confronted with the undiminished prospect of popular resistance will accomplish something. “Just 17% say U.S. troops should remain in Iraq so long as military progress is being made. But 46% remain open to ‘continuing in the same direction’ if Iraq makes political progress, of which Mr. Crocker concedes there has been little. Some 34% say staying the course makes no sense under any circumstances,” the WSJ continues. In other words, nearly half of all Americans are “open” to continued slaughter and misery inflicted on a populace innocent of any offense against Jane or Joe Stepford.
