Time to stop Beeston Tesco?

Beeston Eddie | 28.08.2007 17:39 | Free Spaces | Globalisation

Now the site has been cleared is it time to reclaim the heart of Beeston?

The long awaited arrival of Tesco in the centre of Beeston is now a step closer with the completed site clearance.

Local politicians have shown their impotence in the face of corporate might and so the time has come for citizen action to reclaim the centre of Beeston.

Is anyone else up for a bit of community gardening / direct action on the Tesco site?

Is it time to support our local businesses and provide a space that will really benefit the people of Beeston?

If I am wrong and alone please tell me!!

Iam up for it & I know others, but your email doesnt seem2b working, please email me asap.
Hard2 believe tescos want to build another one there, as nearby there are already 2 giant tescos,1 at long eaton next2 asda & another near chillwell barracks.

Resistance to a proposed Tesco in Sheffield is building up, check oiut this article:  http://www.indymedia.org.uk/en/regions/sheffield/2007/09/380634.html

Maybe its time for a wider (regional) network to meet and discuss how we can effectively fight this corporate giant.

Thanks for your comments, good to hear of some solidarity.

The email should be working, I have checked it just now.

I have put a letter in the next issue of Beeston Express so hopefully there will be a response from a wider audience soon so that a movement can be built.

Would be good to come up with some good concise material as to why tesco should be opposed. I seem to remember Corporate Watch had some useful stuff, can you think of any other sources?

Possibly this could be handed out in Beeston to raise awareness or distributed in the local area?

Dear Beeston Eddie, still don't seem to be able to get through to your email - perhaps Tesco are culture jamming?

to be honest i cant wait for it !!

the sainsburys is dead expensive, somerfeild is staffed by bunch of muppets and has really odd stock- whole isle of pet food but only 2 types of pasta?

beeston needs a decent supermarket and the extra jobs will be a bonus.

whole will suffer from tesco?

only the other supermarkets. there have been two supermarkets in beeston for ages and 3 larger supermarkets a short distance away and the smaller businesses still stand such as the flower stall next to argos and fri/sat fruit and veg stall by iceland !!

i can understand folk are hesitant but its called the future and bigger businesses will come into smaller towns like this and to be honest nothing is really going to change. at the end of the day its about money and tesco and many other businesses will come to us.

o beeston now has 2 subways- one in centre and one on queens road? but no one has complained about that, or cafe nero threatening local cafes? ---- all big companies dominating thier particular markets and yet not a thing said.

Corporate giant ????????

ok how about wilkinsons, argos,JD weatherspoons,Sainsburys,Iceland,WH Smith, Superdrug, Boots, Cafe Nero, Subway and somerfield

ALL CORPORATE GIANTS and yet they dont get a mention from you? its VERY hypocritical to slam Tesco setting up shop when these juggernaught have been settled in beeston for some time !! perhaps you havent because these companies have been a convenience to you, just as Tesco will convenience many people looking for somewhere more local to shop !!

sort out your argument before you start babbling on about something you have no real concept off !!
