any country deporting refugees is obviously a hideous act, thus israel is to be blamed fully for the actions taken against the darfuri refugees.

however this article seems like just another "bash israel because it is always evil no matter what happens" article, as everyone ignores that the muslim "umma" of all the muslim states even remotely near sudan do not except sudanese refugees despite the fact that they should actually belong to the "umma" of muslims. i see no posts here bashing saudi arabia or egypt on this issue.

Israel's interior minister just today has called for suspending the policy of allowing Ethiopians with Jewish ancestry to move to the country.

While rabbinical authorities judge the so-called Falash Mura to be sufficiently Jewish to qualify for Israeli citizenship, Meir Sheetrit said they were not really Jewish and had been let in only because of "political correctness".

"Who needs them?" he said in an interview with The Jerusalem Post. "They are all Christians. We need to take care of the future of Israel and this immigration will never finish."

His comments were denounced as racist by senior members of the Falasha community who pointed out that Jews from white countries were allowed into Israel without any question from the authorities.

"The way he is expressing himself has a smell of racism about it because he would not say such statements to any other immigrants from America or Russia," said Avraham Neguise, chairman of the Representatives of Ethiopian Immigrant Organisations in Israel.

Ethiopians who come to Israel often complain of not being able to find good jobs and experiencing discrimination.

The Falasha are said to be the descendants of one of the lost tribes of Israel that trekked south and set up home in the Horn of Africa.

They were Ethiopians living a Christian lifestyle but who claimed to have been forced to convert to Christianity from Judaism.

Meir Sheetrit is himself an African immigrant to Israel. He was born a Moroccan so by his own racist logic he himself should be deported. Even Jews who deny Israel is intrinsically apartheid must be ashamed to witness such a blatant racist as Minister for the Interior carrying out such an undeniably hypocritical and shameful policy.

The state of Israel was forced upon its inhabitants as a refuge from genocide. Israel claims genocide is being commited in Darfur but is now denying refuge to those victims as they are just too dark skinned.

Israel has taken in many refugees and will take up to 1,000 more. I don't like the fact that Israel has deported any of the refugees, but doing that makes it no more racist than the UK which every year deports at least 1,000 of refugees, many of which to their certain deaths.

The 3rd country rule in the EU means that no refugee who crosses a safe border will be accepted in any other EU country. So a refugee who crossed Algeria or Morocco would almost certainly be refused asylum in the UK. In the UK 98% of asylum seekers are refused at first instance. Even after appeal, it is only around 30% of asylum seekers who are accepted to remain here.

The question is though, why do those Darfur refugees pass all the way through the deserts of Sudan and Egypt to get to Israel? It is because they know that they will be treated much more humanely there than in Egypt.

Only a few weeks ago 4 Sudanese refugees were beaten to death by Egyptian border guards as they tried to cross the border into Israel.

Israel is a country under constant threat from its neighbours. Only today a teenage suicide bomber tried to infiltrate Israel from Gaza.

During World War 2 jewish refugees from Germany were mostly not allowed into the UK, and those that did get here were interned in camps for much of the war as enemy aliens. Many others were deported to their deaths.

Before always seeking to single Israel out for a bashing, maybe think a bit more about the issues.
