Environment News From Gagged! (South Wales Anarchists)

Here's some envirnment news from the forthcoming isue of Gagged!, the South Wales Anarchist news letter (pipeline news, 2 new power stations planned for Wales, Incinerator planned for Cardiff, more dredging off the S Wales coast):

Protestors Sabotage Welsh Gas Pipeline, Will Fight Second Pipe Plans Tooth and Nail

Protestors have sabotaged the contraversial LNG pipeline, causing significant damage to the pipe itself and works vehicles.
Meanwhile, leccy company National Grid is considering building a second environmentally damaging gas pipeline across Wales.
The Brecon beacons gas pipeline works were sabotaged during a night action as part of the week of action against climate change and in defence of the earth. Armed with only a wrecking bar and determination a small team was able to bypass the poor security and render immobile a total of 11 machines including tipper trucks and excavators. Major engine and hydraulic components were destroyed and the pipeline itself was holed in several places. The pipeline is destroying natural habitats in order to supply a finite fuel that we cannot continue burn if the life on this planet is to survive.
The first pipeline, which will transport liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Milford Haven to Gloucestershire has already cut a huge swathe through the Welsh countryside and has been held up every step of the way by protestors. When activated it will transport dangerous highly pressurised gas through towns and villages, often running just metres from schools, homes and public buildings.
Direct action by anti-climate change protestors has already significantly delayed progress on the first pipe, and National Grid has spent thousands evicting protestors from numerous camps along the way. Due to a combination of determined protests and harsh terrain the first gas-guzzling pipeline is badly behind schedule. The company will be penalised with hefty fines if they don't complete the project on time, so they are pulling out the stops spending more and more cash on the project.
Protestors are already primed for another all-out assault on the pipe, and have vowed to resist a second pipeline even more strongly than they have the first.

Two more polluting power stations planned for Wales

Fossil fuel pushers at Npower have signed a huge deal to build a massive gas power station in Pembrokeshire, and serial polluters Severn Power have just had the go-ahead to build a second gas power station in Newport.
Both stations will be ecologically damaging and will waste hundreds of millions of pounds. This money should be spent on implementing and promoting small-scale sustainable electricity generation using tidal, wind, and solar power.
The move has been welcomed by carbon dinosaurs at Pembrokeshire and Newport councils, who say the stations will provide much-needed jobs. However, most of the jobs created will be filled by highly trained workers from outside the local community, leaving only short-term construction jobs and low-skill low-wage positions for local people... this can only be bad news for Wales.
Both companies try to sell the use of gas as a clean alternative to coal and nuclear power, but that fact is gas is just another fossil fuel. The station will pump out tonnes of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, adding to runaway climate change.

Cardiff Bay Incinerator Planned

Politicians have a approved plans to build a massive incinerator in Cardiff Bay in the site of the former Nippon Elecrical Glass factory. The companies who plan to build this monster claim it will not only dispose of our rubbish, but the heat it generates can be used to generate electricity.
At first glance this may seem like a green and sustainable solution to the problem of what to do with our waste. But incinerators are an eco red herring.
Incinerators burn paper and plastics that could be recycled and re-used. Far from being an environmentally friendly way of dealing with our mountains of rubbish simply burning them ends up perpetuating our use plastics, which are made from oil, a fossil fuel that's gonna run out in the very near future.
Instead of building facilities like this, which will only encourage us to use more plastic and produce more damaging waste, we need to use our brains and start building proper local recycling facilities, while going about changing the way we consume non-renewable materials like plastic. Instead of hoping our waste problems will go away in a puff of smoke we need to seriously start to reduce, re-use, and recycle!

Locals Oppose South Wales Sand Dredging

Big dredging companies are looking to double the amount of sand they can take from the sea off the south Wales coast have met with opposition from locals on the Gower.
Dredging is having catastrophic effects on the area’s beaches as greedy companies scoop up sand close to the shoreline. If this carries on our beautiful coast will lose its beaches altogether, and an already fragile ecosystem will be destroyed.
What’s driving this rampant destruction? It’s the kamikaze will to keep the construction industry in concrete and making ever bigger, more unsustainable, profits whatever the cost to the environment.
The companies - Hanson, United Marine Dredging and CEMEX UK - are currently allowed to remove up to 900,000 tonnes annually from Nash Bank, off Porthcawl where there has already been significant beach erosion.
But their operations there are to end by 2010 and they are seeking permission from the Welsh Assembly to dredge up to 1.8m tonnes a year from a new location south of Carmarthen Bay and west of Gower.
Last week Minister for Environment, Sustainability (yes, that’s what she calls herself!) and Housing Jane Davidson gave the go-ahead for a separate company - Llanelli Sand Dredging Ltd - to conduct more dredging off Gower despite a 30,000 signature petition of opposition to it.
