Aug. 11, 2007 (McClatchy-Tribune Regional News delivered by Newstex) --
Movies for the Kids Matinee today at the Historic Yuma Theatre will offer a break in weekend boredom.

The free movies start at 1 p.m. for ages 5 to 12, followed by a short flick for ages 12 to 15. As an added attraction, homemade goodies will be on sale in the theater lobby, 254 S. Main St.

The first animated show is 'Stellaluna,' about a young fruit bat separated from her mother.

In her lonely plight, a family of birds takes her under wing. Her life is confused because the birds sleep at night and that is when she wants to fly. Then the birds warble during the day when she wants to sleep.

Stellaluna learns to face life with an open mind and heart, and to savor things that make her different than everyone else.

After this 41-minute film, 'Confessions of a Late Bloomer' comes on, telling about Donny (Taylor Close), a 15-year-old boy who is smaller than his classmates and the brunt of jokes. He's challenged by Cal (D'Angelo Jones) to give Sheila (Christina Stacey) a kiss.

Donny wants to prove himself because he's in love with Sheila and wants to win her away from Cal.

This film short is only 15 minutes long, leaving time for participation in other afternoon events in Yuma.

The Sahuaro Girl Scout Council is co-sponsoring the free Kids Matinee this week with the Yuma Art Center.

On Aug. 18, the matinee feature will be co-sponsored by the Grand Canyon Council Boy Scouts of America.
