'Be the Media' at the Big Green Gathering

As the Big Green Gathering (BGG) 2007 programme explained, the 'Be the Media' tent in the Campaigns field hosted "a series of presentations, discussions and practical workshops around DIY media in all its forms: from print publications, radical radio and video activism, to the 'new' media of internet websites, blogging, podcasts and streaming" and also covered "less conventional media such as street art, graffiti, stencilling..."

The BGG  http://www.big-green-gathering.com attracts a diverse mix of individuals, groups, campaigns and organisations working on green issues with a focus on green lifestyles, technology and activism. This year's gathering at Fernhill Farm near Cheddar ran from 1-5 August, during which time the 'Be the Media' tent offered over 30 sessions, amply demonstrating that anyone can become the media. The full programme can be viewed here:  http://www.big-green-gathering.com/index.php?pageid=227

The tent was also home to two photo exhibitions - photographs from this year's G8 protests in Germany and billboard subvertising - along with an indymedia dvd, book and information stall and a free shop.

Podcasts from the daily field recording and editing sessions by Flash Radio will soon be available online. Check them out at  http://flashradio.wordpress.com

It was inspiring to see so many people using this space in so many different ways over the five days. While the radio podcasters worked quietly in one corner and passers-by browsed at the stall and free shop or admired the photography, all sorts of workshops happened in the middle. These ranged from discussion on various aspects of the future of alternative media to practical media-making in the field (literally), and when the subvertisers moved in on Friday afternoon you couldn't see the ground for people, paper and paste.

Anyone like to post reports from workshops they attended or ran?

Great except 4 razor wire 20 metre tall fences and full on nazi security checking wrist bands frequently and ejecting people by force if not in posession of one ! Oh and also the price tag of £120 ...... Something not quite right with this unless you a rich lifestylist playing at being green and hippy!

Big Green and money

The Flash Radio feature podcast on the Big Green and money, especially social enterprises, grassroots movements and money. It's mainly interview based, here are obvious gaps, people we should have talked to, but it still makes an interesting listen.

The 'addition' above is nonsense. There was no such razor wire fence and the ticket price wasn't what is claimed above either. I was stopped several times by security for not having a wrist band and never escorted off site. Indymedia should never have promoted that comment as an addition, it should have been hidden has bullshit lies.
