CUERO, Jul. 30, 2007 (McClatchy-Tribune Regional News delivered by Newstex) --
'Ruby's Town,' the documentary on Cuero's racing turkey Ruby Begonia and the annual TurkeyFest celebration, took home top honors in its category at the recent Rural Route Film Festival in New York City. The film, directed by Erik McCowan, was named the festival's top documentary and won a $300 cash prize, one of only three awards given out. The festival, which is in its fifth year, was created to highlight works that deal with rural people and places.
McCowan said, 'The reaction was extremely positive. It is fun to go to a different state, a whole different culture, and they accept the movie.'
The film was shown at the San Antonio Underground Film Festival in June and the International Film Festival in Minneapolis in April.
Earlier this month, 'Ruby's Town' was screened for about 200 people in Cuero.
It is scheduled to be shown again in September at King Turkey Days in Worthington, Minn., where Ruby Begonia will begin her quest for three consecutive wins in the Great Gobbler Gallop.
