Plea for help in mast battle

Resident | 27.07.2007 20:01 | Ecology | Technology | London | South Coast

AN APPEAL for help in a battle against an 02 mast has been made by residents in Surrey.

Wrote Tracy Franklin, who contacted Indymedia: "Hi, I live in a town called Meadvale. It's just outside Reigate in Surrey.
"Recently there have been many attempts by various mobile phone companies to get masts erected very close to houses and schools etc. At every attempt the local community have all got together and opposed the plans.
"This has worked very well, but recently 02 made an application to Reigate and Banstead council to erect a mast in Blackthorn Close - the only difference this time was that the council did not make any of these proposals public.
"As you probably know, the general public get a limited period of time in which they can then oppose the application.
"Basically the council have said that a temporary junior office worker at the council offices made a mistake and never passed the application on to the necessary department who deal with making this planning information known to the public.
"The whole thing completely stinks. Someone somewhere has deliberately stopped the application being made known to the public.
"Also 02 made two applications - one in Blackthorn Close and one in Arbutus Close. When it came to light about the supposed error by the council, the public were then told in the local press not to oppose one of the sites because if they do then 02 will simply start work the following day on the other site.
"It's totally f***in' outrageous the way they have tried to silence us. A local woman has started a group called "MAM" - Meadvale Against Masts - and we have had some good interest from local press but we need more ideas and more ways of trying to stop this going ahaed.
"The council are up 02's ass and we're desperately now trying to stop this. Mr Stevenson from 02 has completely ignored any letters that have been sent to him regarding our concerns etc etc. We are really desperate. If anyone can help us in any way possible, please get in touch asap."
