Kovalesky and Hume were first named in June 2007 by netzwerk recherche (NR), a German association of investigative reporters, in the (German language) proceedings of its annual conference. This follows several months of German and US newspapers dropping hints as to the pilots' identities.

The first public identification of the two pilots in the English language was by the SourceWatch wiki in July 2007. The articles on Kovalesky and Hume use FAA records and other primary and secondary sources to corroborate the claims made by NR. I'm the author of the SourceWatch articles.
