Work is continuing at EcoWorks with the Straw Bale building. Walls are mostly enclosing the building now. Window-frames fitted. Layers of lime rendering on the outside walls. Now, over the last few days, a start is made on the inside walls. A preparation of clay, sand and straw is mixed. Clay is sieved to remove lumps and stones. Sand added to the mixture and a little water added sparingly.

Straw Bale work on eco-building in St.Anns: Part 20

Work is continuing at EcoWorks with the Straw Bale building. Walls are mostly enclosing the building now. Window-frames fitted. Layers of lime rendering on the outside walls.

Now, over the last few days, a start is made on the inside walls. A preparation of clay, sand and straw is mixed. Clay is sieved to remove lumps and stones. Sand added to the mixture and a little water added sparingly.

Then with a number of people stomping about on it, it is thoroughly mixed together. An amount of straw is added. The mixture is checked for its stickness and the team apply it to the straw bale walls. A clay plaster.

Unlike the lime rendering outside, it is not neccessary to wait until the previous layer is dry. The nexr layer can be applied the following day.

It is difficult to be proscriptive about proportions of materials. These will be different with materials from different places. Thus, a few test mixtures were made and applied in 'control experiments'. Assesments was thus made for its adherence to the straw walls, its easy of application and its stickyness.

More to follow........

I was just thinking the other day that it would be great to combine some of the photos from what is now a comprehensive series into a 3 minute (?) slideshow that could be put on Youtube or whereever
Thanks Tash for taking time to record this project
Its greatly appreciated

need more than just the pics

Any film or whatever would also need some quite detailed text or narrative as otherwise it would be hard for others to reproduce the results from this project. This is why these pictures, great though they are, are just not enough on their own. One always needs to know just why things are done in such a manner etc.

keen to learn
