the stepney squat

that charges activist groups 500 quid to use it right?

Groovy.

typical of most squats

It's not unusual for those holding down squats to charge a fee or take a cut of the takings. It's often as high as 50% for squat party crews. The circle community who squatted St.Georges, took over a grand from the indymedia (FBI) server benefit a couple of years back. Only the overtly political 'social centre' squats such as the ramparts and the wombles squats seem to have a specific policy about not taking a wedge.

Not for profit

I don't think they should take - except of course to cover their costs. Not when it is not an event of commercial nature but a benefit to fund an action/ project/ campaign to help the planet and the people! Private interest everywhere, squatters are as bad as any NGO. We definitely need a social centre.

You don't know what you're chatting about

Your presumptions are very fucking rich and in your short-sightedness could do more damage to the benefit than any costs would. The guys that are doing the benefit are doing it with FA money and like any benefit are doing it with the help of lots of favours, not money. So its kind of like mutual aid, which surely having a space like this can help do. So don't chat crap about something you know nothing about.

Edwards your're talking shite. This has no connection with the hippies from St Georges. Been involved with groups that have put srtuff on there - Don't recall the nice people charging us. believe it or not peopel have to eat and these squatters you are on about do other events and actions that may be outside your core activist circle.

BTW what'/who's on?
