GM Crop Trashing in Local Press

poon | 09.07.2007 18:05 | Bio-technology | Ecology | Cambridge

The local paper in Cambridge has run an article on the crop trashing which happened just outside the city over the weekend.

 http://www.cambridge-news.co.uk/news/city/2007/07/09/187aafb9-66da-418f-8e25-e72fda3d909f.lpf

The company running the trials "understand some people have concerns about the technology" but they are "appalled they should resort to trespass and criminal damage to prevent legitimate scientific research"!

ho hum :-)

Trashing GM crops won't cure or stop anything. I'm a single mother struggling to bring up 2 kids. If they can produce a spud that doesn't rot and spoil a whole bag-full why not let them ?
Because it's GM ? Give me a break - if it means 10 less sprayings with chemicals ( and you can't grow spuds here without spraying for blight ) I'll take one millionth of an ounce of gene-added non-spud as compared to an ounce of blight spray residue.
It's about time GM activists got educated - who among those who wrecked the spuds even knows what exactly they were wrecking ? Not a damn one of you ! Yet in a bad wet year like this, where blight wrecks loads of spuds, you condemn me to pay twice as much as normal in order to get spuds to feed my family, and force me to eat chemicals.

Dear Brenda Nobbs,

you've either swallowed the GM industry hype whole, or you are one of their PR types paid to write that kind of stuff in places like this.

>Trashing GM crops won't cure or stop anything.
It will stop the spread of GM pollen, and the cross-fertilisation of surrounding crops.
It's cured Britain of the GM blight that was spread across our island, endangering the future of your children's safe food supply, and meaning that you have no choice over what you eat. There were fields full of GM crops. Most were decontaminated, like this one. The GM companies fled the country with their tail between their legs.

> If they can produce a spud that doesn't rot and spoil a whole bag-full why not let them ?
Blight affects the potaotoes in the ground. They already produce non-GM blight-resistant ones: see the pictures/details at  https://www.indymedia.org.uk/en/2007/07/374920.html

> if it means 10 less sprayings with chemicals
Research into amounts of chemicals used by farmers on GM & non-GM has not shown the difference that the GM companies trumpeted. It just locks the farmers into buying the GM company's own chemicals.

> ( and you can't grow spuds here without spraying for blight
Try eating an organic blight-free potato grown in this country then!

>It's about time GM activists got educated - who among those who wrecked the spuds even knows what

Probably every single one of them has researched the topic. And in any case, would you discriminate against people who are intelligent and passionate but might not have a university degree, oh struggling single mother of two?

> you condemn me to pay twice as much as normal in order to get spuds to feed my family, and force me to eat chemicals.
Oh yes, that'll be me forcing you then!! Now you're just having a laugh! Try feeding your kids organic (yes you can buy it cheaper in cheap supermarkets or some single mothers I know grow their own) if you're really worried about chemicals.
