1. CSC helps to break media silence on Miami 5


"The BBC World Service yesterday broke new ground in broadcasting the first media interview by phone with Gerardo Hernandez from his maximum security prison in Victorville, California. The programme "Newshour" reaches a wide audience not only throughout the world but also in the US where the British broadcaster is well respected.

"Internet and international press coverage of the programme has helped to give maximum publicity to the case during the weeks leading up to the next stage of the appeal on 20th August in Atlanta and this is due in no small part to the relentless campaigning work of the Cuba Solidarity Campaign in Britain. In terms of breaking the media silence surrounding the case of these five Cuban political prisoners this is nothing short of a coup."

In response to pressure from the US, Barclays Bank and Hilton Hotels have taken measures to exclude Cuban customers from their services. EDM 1408 calls on the British government to make its objections clear to the US administration.
