25th June 2007: Sheffield Floods

Chris | 27.06.2007 20:32 | Climate Chaos | Sheffield

A selection of photos from the Sheaf Valley: here the river didn't burst it's banks and the flooding was in the places where there are usually floods -- where the roads dip to go under the London train line.

These photos are not anywhere near as dramatic as the ones from the other side of town, see for example these on the Burngreave Messenger site:  http://www.burngreavemessenger.org/archives/june-2007/photographs-of-flooding/

The Sheaf didn't burst it's banks here, no doubt in part because it did further upstream, including at Millhouses Park where there was a tragic drowning of a 14 year old boy. At the junction of Broadfield Road and Clyde Road (  http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?ll=53.35976,-1.476583&spn=0.000629,0.001628&t=h ) the level of the river was higher than the road -- the water was only contained by the flood walls.

There were quite a few people out in their customised Landrovers, seemingly driving around through the floods for kicks and a small number of people walking home.

Many other people from Sheffield will have far more interesting tales to tell about their experiences and many people are still without electricity and unable to returned to their homes due to flood damage.

Photos from the public sent to the mainstream media:

disgusting local mps response to the flooding in sheffield

28.06.2007 00:56

i thourght it was absolutely disgusting that both blunkett and the hillsborough mp "whatever her name is" when called by the speaker at blairs final pm's p&q's made no mention of the damage caused to their constituants homes and to local business' instead they chose to take part in tony's final house of commons "love in"......sheffield city council are a disgrace as always its the poor who live in the flood plain area's .....no adequate flood barriers no riverside protection and yet they steal from us year by year with council tax try spending some of it securing the homes of those people in brightside and the surrounding areas affected last monday.sure they are cleaning the city up now but you can bet they are more concerned about business and commerce getting back on its feet than local residents homes ruined cos they cannot afford to live anywhere else other than in the most vulnerable areas of sheffield. to listen to blunkett and that others idiot betts they made it sound as though its one of those things and people will just have to learn to live with it.will any leasons be learned will adequate flood barriers be errected i doubt it.global warming climate change .....mmmm my jury is now out once again think maybe i might be starting to become a convert.cycling down through rivelin valley out to lower rivelin reservoir this evening seeing dead ducks beavers and other water dwellers washed up dead by the side of the road not a nice site very sad.

"There were quite a few people out in their customised Landrovers, seemingly driving around through the floods for kicks"

Are floods so rare over there that you folks don't realize how suicidal that can be? Floods can wash out roads. Where the road is under water you can't be sure that there still is a road under the water. What you think is just a foot or so of water over the road surface might be eight feet of water over a
hole where the road once was.

Floods are nothing to play with.

NEVER drive over a water covered road when the water is from a flood.

Clearly an inside job...

The truth is out there....
The truth is out there....

So who is really to blame for all this water damage? Are we really expected to believe the official conspiracy theory that this was caused by heavy rain and poorly maintained drains? In summer? Where is the evidence for this version of events? Why have we not seen the CCTV footage of the water initially rising? Who were the people dressed in council worker uniforms that were seen hanging around in Sheffield before this event? What are Sheffield council and the government trying to hide? And who benefits from this?

There are far too many coincidences here that need proper investigation. Questions need to be asked and lengthy time consuming debates need to organised as a matter of urgency! Anyone who says otherwise is just burying their head in the sand like an Ostrich. Though to be honest Emus are better looking....

Thanks Guido

Well done to Guido for raising the possibility of this being a concpiricy of some kind. Of course most people having seen the facts and listened to real experts will realise the truth but perhaps we can convince a few gullible fools to think this was somehow a secret Mossad operation.

I suggest we find some grainy film of the flooding and then run this film on websites telling people that this is proof of a secret operation. With luck enough idiots will be convinced to allow us to estalish a healthy income writing books, going on lecture tours and appearing on late night obscure TV shows.

I suggest we call it the Flood Truth Campaign

There is a story behind the floods...

28.06.2007 11:32

But Guido is just teasing me for these comments:

 http://www.indymedia.org.uk/en/2007/05/371895.html?c=on#c174851
 http://www.indymedia.org.uk/en/2007/05/371895.html?c=on#c174896

Which have noting to do with the flooding in Sheffield.

Coverage on Indymedia about the story of the the drainage system in Sheffield would be interesting and perhaps it'll happen sometime -- that raw sewage ends up in many Sheffield rivers every time there is heavy rain is rather disgusting and it stinks and the privatisation of the water industry is part of this story...

But this article is clearly not the place for a debate about 9/11 -- I think this comment and the one from Guido above should be hidden.
