10 women have been arrested from Aldermaston nuclear weapons establishment at 11.30pm this evening. New Byelaws have been brought into force prohibiting camping or fires. The women were arrested for not puting out the small camp fire.

10 women are being arrested at 11.30pm on Friday 8 June 2007 outside Aldermaston nuclear weapons establishment near Reading, Berkshire.

New Byelaws were brought into force on 28 May 2007 prohibiting camping and having fires.

The Aldermaston Women's Peace Camp has existed for over 20 years, it started at the time of Greenham Common Women's Peace Camp, it now consists of a monthly peace camp over the period of a week end. Traditionally women camp and have a small fire. The Byelaws clearly prohibit this activity and limit the right to peaceful protest against the proliferation of nuclear weapons.

i'm one of the arrestees from friday - if you want to read more background on the byelaws, see  http://www.aldermaston.net/news/183.

several of the sections relate directly to attempting to prevent the womens peace camp continuing. Its kind of like our equivalent of attempts to get shut of Brian Haw (and everyone else, of course) under SOCPA (though we also have socpa at aldermaston too!)

btw - all 10 women were charged with two byelaws offences under s7 of the Aldermaston byelways 2007- namely lighting a fire and "camping". All are due in Newbury magistrates (one of our favourite haunts) on 21 June.
