Lime Render on Straw Bale at Ecoworks

Straw Man | 08.06.2007 10:00

We will be rendering the outside of our straw bale building with lime and sand from Thurs 14th-Sat 16th June. We will be there from 10.30-4.30 each day - all welcome! (we may stay later in the evenings if we're enjoying it too much...)

Lime is a traditional, natural building material, whose flexibility, breathability and low environmental impact make it the ideal substance for coating the walls of a straw bale building. It is done in several coats.

This is an exciting stage, as we start to put the finishing touches to the walls of our building. We mix the lime and sand by trampling and beating it, then apply it by (gloved) hand - a very low-tech, satisfying method! Everyone is welcome - bring old clothes, work gloves and wellies if you have them (although we have stuff you can borrow). Hot drinks & water provided, but bring your own lunch etc.

Ecoworks is a community garden project on the famous Hungerhill Gardens, St.Anns, Nottingham. Entrance off Ransom Road - ring 07719 428187 if you need extra info. We can also do pick-ups in the town centre by arrangement.

(This event is part of Nottingham Greenweeks - see www. greenweeks.org)

I forgot to say that Tash has put an excellent series of photos of progress on the building on Indymedia....here is a link to the latest one :

That has links to all his previous postings of the building.
