Stop the Mast in Nether Edge

steve | 07.06.2007 21:48 | Health | Sheffield

A new campaign group of Nether Edge has been set up to oppose a new mobile phone base station on Union Road, Sheffield.

They've set up a website, www.stopthemast.org.uk, and leafleted the area with a leaflet that reads:

STOP THE MAST

THIS AFFECTS YOU!

Major mobile phone base station located at Hall's Shopfitters on Union Road

They have been consulting for nearly one year with Sheffield Council planning department WITHOUT YOUR KNOWLEDGE! Proposal and final planning application to be submitted around June 6th 2007.

OUR CONCERNS ARE:

  • This is a Conservation area.
  • There is no scientific consensus on possible health risks! Therefore the potential health implications for you and your family are still unknown.
  • If this is permitted, it erodes the principles of Conservation.
  • Lack of public consultation.
  • Hall's - Long established in this neighbourhood, will no doubt be receiving a significant payment for providing a site for Vodaphone.
  • You may find your property value reduced.

We will be petitioning in the next week and urge you to sign. Our concerns must be heard by the Planning Department.

To make this easier, we have provided the relevant contacts on the reverse and are currently setting up a website www.stopthemast.org.uk to help support this campaign, which will be online within the next two days.

Your health and wealth are unfortunately irrelevant and the campaign will be strengthened by emphasising the principles of Site, Design and Conservation status. Please bear this in mind!

Like most campaigns their first suggestion is to write to local councillors, the press etc. A full list can be found on their web site.

You can only oppose phone-masts if you don't have a mobile phone. Anything else is just hypocrisy. I take it people who live in Nether Edge don't have mobile phones then?
