Putin A Spanner In G8 Works

Protestors could not have disrupted the G8 more than Putins threat to target Europe

The G8 summit protest had an unexpected,if unintentional, helping hand this week. When Putin came out with a direct threat to target Europe with Atomic missiles if the USA went ahead and postioned radar controlled anti ballistic missiles in what was former soviet territory. The planned G8 was to thrash out climate emission controls for the next few years. It is now expected it will be taken up getting Putin back on side. The spanner thrown by Putin has also put the damper on Tony Blairs feather of leaving with some kind of achievment in emission controls, something by indication the USA and Bush had already scuppered. But he can take consolation in being able to blame Putin as he could not blame Bush.
The original plan to position the missiles caused Russia to spend billions on upgrading it's nuclear capability. So it's something they took very very seriously. At the same time Putin lambasted the United States for it's nazi style way of policing the world. The recent entry of former soviet countrys in to the European community and the agreement with them to allow the bases was the final straw.Russia felt threatened. Not only but also the Uk isolated Putin with the media printing stories of his KGB days and linking it to the murder of Litvenyenko at Putins instruction.Which in effect crimminalised him,it seems the Uk government are in short supply of diplomats. One could even link the United States stance that the missiles are there to protect the west from rogue states to Putin being set up as a rogue, something that Putin will not have missed. The next few weeks are going to be interesting to see if we are all back to the cold war.Maybe that is not such a bad thing. The USA will have to use it's trillion dollar budgets keeping pace while the rest of the world live in peace.
