The Misuse of gandhi: the case of CANVAS

brian | 04.06.2007 06:53

There is an organisation called CANVAS that misuses Gandhis non-violent philosophy, in order to bring down states that dont obey the Washington consensus...i bet few have heard of them.

WHO has heard of CANVAS?

'Golinger also made reference to the fact that leaders from the Serbian campaign, and people from the Center for Applied Nonviolent Action and Strategies (Canvas) have been involved with the Venezuelan opposition and have given trainings about nonviolent resistance inside Venezuela. According to the webpage of Canvas, Venezuela is one of three nations in which the resistance strategies are being used.'

I wasnt until i read this article about their recent activities in Venezuela. They seem to apply Gandhi's philosophy and tactics that would have Gandhi turning in his grave...if he was in a grave.

Here is their website:

where we read:
'Centre for Applied NonViolent Action and Strategies - or CANVAS represents an International network of trainers and consultants, established in 2003.

Our Vision of tomorrow :
World free of violence, with every single political conflict solved by nonviolent struggle.

Our Mission : Support, advocate and promote!

CANVAS trainers and consultants support nonviolent democratic movements through transfer of knowledge on strategies and tactics of nonviolent struggle. CANVAS Supporting Active Network in four countries advocates and promotes battles for democracy worldwide'
