Rostock Saturday. The international demo.

Guido | 03.06.2007 16:32 | G8 Germany 2007 | Globalisation | Social Struggles | World

The march moves at a snails pace due to the samba bands and sound systems that are dotted along the route. No one seems to mine as it has a carnival atmosphere and there is still no sign of the predicted rain

Quite a lot of people...
Quite a lot of people...

..from a diversity of movements and traditions.

Cobas.

Assorted reds.

Welcome to Rostock.

The clowns.
The clowns.

Not the clowns.
Not the clowns.

There is no trouble on the demo. The Police are out in force to protect any hotels that are related to the G8. The demonstrators ignore them with the exception of the clowns who mercilessly take the piss whenever they come across them. The german tradition of marching in blocks is in evidence with just about every strain of the movement having its own space to march and make speeches.

It’s difficult to gauge the numbers. There are tens of thousands in attendance with probably the same number again marching from the coach point outside of town. It’s a very impressive sight from a nearby hill. A sea of people, banners and carnival stuff. The sound systems are belting out a mixture of music and speeches.

The photo marked 'cobas' is from the block formed by those in the anti-imperialist barrio at Camp Rostock, including Cobas, Revolution, League For the Fifth International, ILPS and Atik. The photo itself, along with 'assorted reds' is of comrades from Revolution and L5I
