UPCOMING ACTIONS AND EVENTS:
----------------------------------------------
1) INT’L DAY OF ACTION AGAINST CLIMATE CHANGE & THE G8 - 8.06.07
5,000 English flyers sent out to social centres and related groups around
the UK
(and we've got some great feedback on them). 7,000 German Flyers are on
their way to Germany. Resources are on the RT website, the Call Out has
been posted around the world on different Internet sites, and there is an
article in the G8 newspaper - 20,000 being printed. Please keep telling
people about the day and suggest it's a good day to take climate action.
Organise actions and events in local groups!
Post them up on Indymedia and the G8 page on the RT website or e-mail them
to  info@risingtide.org.uk
(Oh, and if you're going to Germany, have fun!)

2) CAMP FOR CLIMATE ACTION COMES TO HEATHROW, 14-21.8.07
Although the location is different,to 2006, the philosophy of the camp
remains the same: to be a place for the burgeoning network of people
taking radical action on climate change around the country to come
together for a week of low-impact living, education, debate, networking,
strategising, celebration and direct action. The camp will feature over
100 workshops covering topics such as climate change impacts, carbon
offsetting, biofuels, peak oil, permaculture, practical renewables,
campaign strategy, skills for direct action, and much more. Run without
leaders by everyone who comes along, it will be a working ecological
village using renewable energy, composting waste and sourcing food
locally.

It all comes down to us, now. We are the last generation that can do
anything about climate change. In 20 or 30 years time, should we not
change our ways, we’ll be committed to emissions increases that will see
forests burn, soils decay, oceans rise, and millions of people die. If we
don’t get this issue right, so much else is lost too.
www.climatecamp.org.uk

Also, ‘Another End of the World is Possible’ is a series of captivating
video portraits of people taking radical action against the root causes of
climate change. See the all at www.climatecamp.org.uk. If you want a dvd
copy contact  john@labofii.net

And…You can download a 15 min version of the film 'Reclaim Power - voices
from the camp for climate action' here:

3) LEEDS CRITICAL MASS - Last Friday of the month
Get your chains oiled, your tyres pumped, and adorn your bike with horns
and bells... it's time for a little reclaiming of the streets.
Although nothing has been officially planned it is highly likely that an
accidental meeting of cyclists will take place at 5.30pm in Millennium
Square.

4) CLIMATE CHAOS CAFE- alternate Wednesdays, Leeds
Climate Chaos Cafe got off to a great start last month and will be
continuing through the summer and beyond, every other Wednesday from 7pm
at The Common Place in Leeds.

5) MANCHESTER CRITICAL MASS - 25.05.07
The last one was fantastic, with well over a hundred people riding through
the streets of Manchester. Next one is not planned for Friday 25th may!

and to protest against the pipeline. Meet up around once a month and also
stage direct actions, put on benefit gigs and have info stalls in
Gloucester and at local events.

7) ANTI-ROAD PROTEST PLANNED FOR HILL OF TARA, IRELAND
"The proposed M3 motorway has been described by archaeologists as the
worst case of state-sponsored vandalism ever inflicted on Irish cultural
heritage." - Roadblock. The biggest anti-road protests ever in Ireland are
expected at the Hill of Tara, north west of Dublin. This site is
imminently threatened by a motorway which would pass within a km of its
centre.

11) OBJECT TO THE GOVERNMENT'S BIGGEST ROAD SCHEME
Please object to the futile £1.9 billion widening of the M1 from junction
21-30 on the Highways Agency website by 29 June. This is the largest
scheme in the government's road programme, and will generate huge amounts
of traffic and CO2, and bring more noise and pollution to the residents
of Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire and Chesterfield. Say that you also
want to object to Contract 1, as they are not consulting on this stretch.

12) 'DO IT YOURSELF': NEW TRAPESE HANDBOOK FOR CHANGE
The new Trapese book, 'Do It Yourself - A handbook for changing our
world', is out this week. "This is not a book about what is wrong with the
world...It's about what we can all do about the challenges we face in the
world and how we can make governments and corporations increasingly
irrelevant."
www.handbookforchange.org / www.trapese.org

13) EAST KENT EARTH FIRST!
A new campaigning and action group based in Canterbury with support from
people in the Medway Towns, Sittingbourne, Herne Bay and Thanet.
Website to follow; for now, contact  mattclowes@riseup.net

13) PLANE STUPID GOES LOCAL
Plane Stupid is calling out for local groups to fight the fastest growing
cause of climate change - aviation. Plane Stupid thinks that local groups
taking action within a wider network of Plane Stupid activists is the best
way to fight the unsustainable growth of the aviation industry. If you
would like to set up a group in your area all you need is a few
enthusiastic members committed to using direct action to fight climate
change.

RECENT HAPPENINGS
----------------------------------------------
1) RT NORWICH SPOOF ACTION- 'Build the NDR: Concrete is Freedom!' - 6.05.07
On a fine Saturday morning in May, 15 activists headed into Norwich city
centre to hold a roving protest against the proposed Northern Distributor
Road (NDR). Posing as members of the fictional Coalition for Roads And
Progress (C.R.A.P), they held a series of mock press conferences outside
the Forum, where the County Council are holding an exhibition about plans
for the NDR. It was a successful and inspiring first outing for the new
Norwich Rising Tide group. Watch this space (and
www.risingtide.org.uk/norwich) for more actions against the NDR and other
local climate criminals!
Visit  http://risingtide.org.uk/norwich/ndr to see action report, photos
and the spoof C.R.A.P leaflet (along with serious leaflet outlining our
concerns about the NDR).

2) ROSSPORT 5 FARMER WINS GOLDMAN ENVIRONMENT AWARD - 23.04.07
A farmer who was one of the 'Rossport 5', imprisoned at the behest of
Shell in 2005 , has been awarded the prestigious Goldman Environment
Prize. Willie Corduff, from Mayo in west Ireland, picked up the award
plus a $125,000 cash prize. Willie has been fighting Shell's plans to
build an on-shore refinery next to his home for seven years and is
strongly involved in the local 'Shell-to-Sea' campaign. www.indymedia.ie
& www.shelltosea.com
For footage of over-reactive cops protecting their local community from,
well, the local community, search for 'Shell to Sea' at www.youtube.com

3) BLOCKADE AT SHELL HQ, DUBLIN - 27.04.07
Shell E&P Ireland's head offices in Dublin were shut down for several
hours with a blockade organised by the Dublin Shell to Sea campaign.
Finbar Dwyer of Dublin Shell to Sea said: "This was a successful
non-violent direct action in solidarity with the besieged communities
around Shell's refinery site at Bellanaboy. It was also intended to
highlight the giveaway of Ireland's offshore gas."
www.shelltosea.com

DUBLIN DAY OF ACTION - 18.05.07, Shell HQ, Dublin
‘They deserve it and you deserve better’: Today, Shell to Sea escalated
its campaign against Shell’s command centre with another day of action.
This attempt to shut down Shell’s HQ, like the last day of action
( http://www.indymedia.ie/article/82200) was called to highlight the theft
of natural resources that totals 51 billion euros in the Corrib
field.alone. www.shelltosea.com

4) GAS FLARE @ SHELL HQ, THE HAGUE, 3.05.07
Friends of the Earth Netherlands set up a 15 meter high flare in front of
the Shell HQ in the Hague to highlight Shell's continued gas flaring in
Nigeria.
You can see a short movie at  http://www.milieudefensie.nl/

5) G8 POLICE RAIDS IN GERMANY- 9.05.07
Police raided about 40 buildings, including social centres and several
private homes in Berlin and Hamburg, as well as the alternative web
provider so36.net. Police forces searched the Rote Flora in Hamburg as
well as parts of the Bethanien in Berlin. Both social centres are planning
to be convergence spaces for the G8 protests in early June.

6) ESSO PROTEST IN ABERDEEN- 28.04.07
Some twenty members of Aberdeen Campaign Against Climate Change held a
protest outside one of the Aberdeen Esso petrol stations on 28th April.

7) POLICE CHARGE CYCLISTS AT GLASGOW CRITICAL MASS - 29.04.2007
50-70 cyclists were tailed by a police van for the majority of the ride
with the police stopping some of the riders at the front of the mass and
warning them not to continue else they may face charges. In the midst of
the cycle run, while the Mass dutifully waited at a red light, two
officers made their way to the front of the mass and selected three
cyclists, apparently at random. It should be noted that these three were
not the cyclists spoken to by the police earlier. These arbitrarily
chosen cyclists have been charged with "Cycling without due consideration
for other road users" under section 29 of the 1988 Road Traffic Act .

8) PLANE STUPID AT HEATHROW - 2.05.07
Green activists marked the tenth anniversary of Tony Blair coming to power
by visiting his best friends in industry to highlight the revolving door
between Labour and the aviation industry and his failure to tackle climate
change. The activists chained up the front doors to BAA's Heathrow HQ and
dumped reports from the UN and from the Tyndall Centre, into the reception
area. The activists pledged not to allow the staff out until they’d read
the science. Four were later arrested.

9) FALMOUTH GETS CRITICAL - 5.05.07
On Sat 5th May, cyclists gathered in the town square in Falmouth for the
towns first Critical Mass bike ride. The celebration of combustion free
liberty, picnics and ever so slightly fancy dress boasted nearly 50
riders. There was loads of diversity, from skater boys to hippy chicks,
bikey blokes to art students, crusties, middle aged professionals, old
Earthfirsters, and families with kids. Not bad for a small town virtually
falling off the edge of the country. There are plans to make this a
regular ride.

10) TITNORE WOODS - Change of phone contact
‘The phone number to contact the Titnore Woods protest camp has changed.
The new number for the camp is 07913 534083. The old one no longer works.
Please pass the new number around. We are camped in Titnore Woods near
Worthing to resist a large Tesco and housing development project. It would
destroy some of the last remaining ancient woodland in Sussex, if it goes
ahead. Visitors and donations are welcome.’
 http://www.freewebs.com/titnore

11) NEW CARS SMASHED WHILE ON TRANSPORTATION BY TRAIN
'Since the G8 in Gleneagles 2005 there has been sabotage on 3 different
occasions, with estimated damage about £200,000'.
 http://earthfirst.org.uk/actionreports/climatechaos

12) HANDS OFF IRAQI OIL @ BP & SHELL AGMs, LONDON - 12.04.07/15.5.07
Activists from the Hands Off Iraqi Oil campaign were demonstrating about
the role BP has played in lobbying for a controversial new oil law in
Iraq. The law would transfer control over the majority of the country’s
huge oil reserves from the public sector to multinational companies, for
the first time in 35 years. Iraqi oil workers are currently risking severe
repression by planning an all-out strike. BP has been at the forefront of
efforts to gain access to Iraq's oil since the invasion of Iraq in 2003.

13) ARSON ATTACK AT CAMP BLING, SOUTHEND, ESSEX, 15.04.07
A big thank you from everyone at Camp Bling for all the texts, messages of
support and visits to site, that they received during the weeks following
the arson attack. Everyone is determined to remain on site until this road
scheme is cancelled.

14) RISING TIDE AUSTRALIA LAUNCH COAL PORT PLEDGE - 14.05.07
Taking inspiration from our very own airport pledge, Rising Tide in
Australia has launched a new website, which allows you to pledge to take
Peaceful Direct Action to prevent the massive expansion of Newcastle coal
exports, which was approved by the Iemma Government in April. More
information about the campaign against the
doubling of the world's biggest coal port can be found at:
