Self-Harm in Immigration Removal Centres

NCADC news. Posted by Megan. | 17.05.2007 08:23

Unforgiveable treatment of people seeking asylum.

Every other day a detainee incarcerated in a UK Immigration Removal Centre (IRC), makes an attempt at self-harm (suicide), serious enough to require medical treatment.

In the 12 months from April 2006 to March 2007 there were 199 attempts to self-harm that required medical treatment. That is one incident of self-harm every 1.8 days.

In the same period, 1,949 detainees were put on 'Formal Self-Harm at Risk'.

Detainees and campaigners believe the actual numbers are way higher than those reported.
Since the first Immigration Removal Centre opened in the UK, there have been 10 deaths from self-harm.

Full breakdown of incidents of self-harm/formal self-harm at risk for the last 12 months

I'll help them I’ll donate some blades then I think sleeping tablets also, should do a good job but what would really help them if they stopped in the first safe country they came to instead of coming to soft touch Britain after all we are the third most OVER populated country in the world
