M1 widening to cost £21m per mile

The Observer | 06.05.2007 21:45 | Ecology | Sheffield

Todays Observer contails an article about the cost of the M1 widening which is to cost £21m per mile: "Budget of huge project is now expected to exceed the annual GDP of a third of the world's countries". The first two paragraphs of the article follow, for more info see the feature article: Work Starts On M1 Widening As Protests Continue,  http://www.indymedia.org.uk/en/2007/01/360616.html

The cost of widening the M1, Britain's biggest road-building project, is spiralling out of controll with each mile costing more than £21m.

The National Audit Office was called on last night to investigate why the price of the project has risen from £3.7bn to £5.1bn. The latest estimate makes the 240-mile project bigger than the annual economies of a third of the world's nations.

That (already outrageous) sum will be exceeded, of course. One of the things that the estimate has not taken into account is PROTEST - there is already a direct-action campaign against the M1, it is growing, and it will make sure that if they ever go ahead and try to build the section around Nottingham, the contractors will not make a profit!
