Fires in Manchester City Centre

MC | 30.04.2007 14:34

Two fires in Manchester's city centre.

A five-storey building on Dale Street has burnt down today.

The fire spread on a building opposite (unconfirmed reports say a person may be trapped inside), right next to Manchester's Social Centre, The Basement.

The Basement at the time was closed but it is reported that the space is flooded as firemen tried to stop the fire spreading. Damages are suspected but no reports have been made of anyone being hurt.

The Basement's 30/04

Been down to the Basement today and happy to report that luckily the building has escaped the adjacent inferno.

The Basement is separated from the Dale St building which caught fire this morning by narrow back street but it seems the wind was blowing the right way, away from our social centre.

However the heat set off the spinklers so everything is wet.

There is also damage to front shutters and as we left they were digging up the pavement outside it to get to something electric.

Insurance policy yet to confirm exacly how much is covered.

People managed to get in at 6pm today to get some equipment out.

No one is allowed in there proper until they have demolished the next door building, which they estimate will take about 3 days.

I was told Basement will probably be closed for atleast a week.
