Protest against palm oil loans

Diet Simon | 26.04.2007 07:27

The Asian Development Bank is planning massive expansion of its lending for palm oil production and other destructive monocultures, including in Indonesia, says a German save the rainforest group.

Rettet den Regenwald is asking for signatures to appeal to directors of the bank not to approve any more loans for palm oil plantations.

The Asian Development Bank has played a decisive and disgraceful role in rain forest destruction by funding palm oil plantations.

The ADB is a multinational development bank of whose capital Germany owns 4.4%, the largest European holding. Together the EU states control 16.8% of the voting rights at the ADB.

“Demand of the ADB directors not to approve loans for new palm oil plantations,” exhorts Rettet den Regenwald.

More information and a sample letter are at  http://www.regenwald.org/international/englisch/protestaktion.php?id=160.

“Also ask friends and acquaintances to take part in this action.”

Put an end to the cruelty of palm oil

26.04.2007 08:17

Sorry, I know it must seem like I have too many opinions. One opinion I promote that I think everyone here can agree on is Orangutans are just too damn cute and need to be protected from human greed and abuse. The destruction of their habitat is primarily being caused by the cultivation of palm oil. Palm oil is found in virtually every supermarket good you could mention simply because it is cheap. It is far from environmentally friendly though. Britain imports a million tonnes of palm oil a year so is in a unique position to influence it's production. The website address campaigning against this has changed since I first posted it to :

Go on, click on the link and tell me that face isn't prettier than your own baby. The crap you buy from Tesco can't be worth it's death.
