RECENT HAPPENINGS:
----------------------------------------
1) BATH CLIMATE CAMP: DEMO AND PARTY SET TO CONTINUE AFTER EVICTION - 19/4/07
Bath Climate Camp was evicted by a large numbers of police from Bath and Bristol and London metropolitan, including helicopter and mounted police. The police operation involved random stop and searches at the train station and on the streets - The reason for the eviction? Section 63 of the Criminal Justice Act - the protesters were apparently using the demo as a pretext for a free rave!
However the demo planned for Friday at Land and Marine HQ, was set to continue as was the Party Against Petrol - meeting 12 noon at Bath Abbey.

2) SILENT PROTEST AT NATIONAL PORTRAIT AWARD EXHIBITION OPENING, BRISTOL - 15/4/07
People from Espacio Bristol-Colombia and Bristol Rising Tide picketed the Royal West of England Academy with a visual memorial of some of the people killed by the army and right-wing paramilitaries in the BP-controlled area of Colombia. The gallery is currently exhibiting the National Portrait Award exhibition which is sponsored by BP. The protestors stood silently in front of the gallery for two hours, holding copies of portraits from the exhibition with the faces removed, to signify the face that the faces of the murdered and disappeared are rarely seen. Public support and understanding was overwhelming, with people being visibly moved or angered to learn of BP’s activities.

The Art Not Oil exhibition will visit the Kebele centre - http://www.kebelecoop.org - to coincide with the BP visit to the city.

3) AIRPORT RUNWAY SEIZED BY CLIMATE ACTIVISTS IN SWEDEN - 14/4/07
On 14 April, activists broke into Bromma Airport in Stockholm to occupy the runway for half an hour. The scheduled flight to Gothenburg – a short distance indeed – was delayed, and other planes had to divert their landings. The ten activists, linked by chains and carrying a huge banner which read “Stop domestic flights”, managed to enter the airport and runway without being detected. The ten were arrested and charged with aggravated trespass. The action was carried out by Climax, a group in Stockholm formed only two weeks ago and inspired by Plane Stupid and Rising Tide! The action of 14 April, coinciding with the enormous National Day of Climate Action in the U.S., was the first of its kind to occur in Sweden."Global action against global warming!" - right on!

4) WELSH ANTI-PIPELINE CAMPAIGN - MARCH/APRIL UPDATE

5) POLAR BEAR VISITS THOSE RESPONSIBLE FOR DESTROYING ITS HABITAT - 22/01/07
Bradford witnesses the unusual sight of a placard-waving polar bear.
The “You fly, I die” placard was aimed at those selfish people that continue to fly. The bear visited a variety of travel agents in the city and then made his way to the Thomas Cook call centre, where local residents (inspired by The Camp For Climate Action) had erected a banner and were busy posting the windows with stickers. The police (politely) asked who wanted to be arrested, and five people decided to continue their important public-spirited work through the courts. The bear went home for tea and biscuits.

6) RISING TIDE HELPS DEFEAT NORTH CAROLINA OIL POWER PLANT – 2.4.07
‘Asheville Rising Tide (ART) is celebrating a victory today in the defeat of Progress Energy's oil fired power plant proposed for Woodfin, NC. After a public hearing on April 2,the Woodfin Board of Adjustment unanimously voted against the power plant, dealing a major blow to Progress Energy. Numerous local groups, including ART, started mobilizing against the plant after it was announced in late 2006. The campaign included call-ins, petitioning, community teach-ins, and direct action. ART is not backing down yet. Progress Energy can still appeal the ruling in court, and if that fails they may very well target another, probably less organized community, to build their plant. ART will continue to keep the heat on Progress Energy until the proposal is completely off the drawing board.’

7) CORPORATE CRIMINALS EXXONMOBIL TARGETED IN SURREY – 5/6/4.07
Around 100 people turned up on a gloriously sunny Good Friday at ExxonMobil (Esso)'s UK headquarters in Leatherhead, Surrey for an Easter action organised by Campaign Against Climate Change. The vigil and protest ran for 24 hours, starting from Thursday early evening. There was a chilled-out festival vibe on Friday, with colourful costumes and banners, live acoustic music, speakers, poetry, food stalls and face-painting.

8) IPCC REPORT - 6/4/07Brussels, Belgium.
This was the second of a series of four to be released throughout 2007. "What this report shows is that we are simply running out of time." Stephanie Tunmore, Greenpeace International Climate and Energy Campaigner. Some of the reports key findings include:
It is likely that climate change will induce mass extinction of species within 60-70 years.
Over the next decades the number of people at risk of water scarcity is likely to rise from tens of millions to billions.
Huge numbers of people in the Asian Mega-deltas will be at risk due to sea level rise, storm surge and river flooding.
Scary stuff...act now!

9) LOW CARBON BOAT TRIP - EASTER 2007
Starting on Easter Day, Mukti Mitchell will be sailing his small (15’)boat around Britain to promote low carbon lifestyles. He’ll be calling at many coastal towns & cities, doing talks along the way.

10) SPRING INTO ACTION STOPS POWER STATION OPERATIONS! - 10/4/07
Climate activists from around the East Midlands managed to stop operations at Radcliffe on Soar Power Station after climbing onto conveyor belts and dumper trucks inside the plant. The power station is the 3rd biggest emitter of CO2 emissions in the UK. The blockade lasted for 3 hours and 11 people were arrested all of which were later released. The action was part of 'Spring Into Action' - a week of workshops, entertainment and actions around the issue of Climate Change in Nottingham.
A spokeswoman for the protesters said: "Putting pressure on individuals to reduce emissions when companies like E.ON are profiting from this polluting industry is obscene and irresponsible. We should not be burning coal in the 21st century."
http://www.indymedia.org.uk/en/2007/04/367623.html
11) SHEFFIELD M1 PROTESTORS ARRESTED - 17.04.2007
Eight people were arrested and houses were raided yesterday before a planned action against M1 widening in South Yorkshire could take place. According to the mainstream media three women and five men were arrested on suspicion of committing Public Order offences and were later released on bail, the arrest were made before the activists could stop any work and the 'incident' did not disrupt traffic.

14) SHELL WILD-LIE EXHIBITION ON TOUR!
Our ‘Shell’s Wild Lie’ (SWL) exhibition is currently in Belfast to coincide with the showing there of the Shell Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition. SWL will be at Synergy on May 11th in London, possibly at Shell's AGM on May 15th, various locations over the summer and will be the first exhibition after Shell Wildlife at the Aberystwyth Arts Centre in November. (We're looking for help finding further images for SWL, and with general upkeep.) We are continuing to contact judges, venues and the BBC Wildlife Advisory Panel in relation to Shell's involvement and have been getting some encouraging responses.

15) SHELL TO SPONSOR THE GUARDIAN'S CLIMATE CONFERENCE, LONDON, 11.6.06
...However, we have recently learned that Shell is to be the major sponsor for The Guardian's Climate Conference, this summer. This is just the latest attempt to greenwash the public into forgetting that Shell continues to destroy habitats and livelihoods across the globe. On the one hand the company appears concerned about climate change, while with the other it continues to follow an aggressive policy of increasing its oil extraction. Rising Tide UK is planning appropriate action, possibly involving the ‘Shell’s Wild Lie’ exhibition.
You can contact The Guardian to let them know how you feel about this. Please do!

16) ‘RECLAIM POWER - Voices from the Camp for Climate Action’ DVD
The cine rebelde collective based in Freiburg / Germany have just produced this 62min documentary film. It was made with the co-operation of activists from the Camp, including Rising Tide.

Please do!
