Demonstrations: “Sack Parliament”

Baroness Miller of Chilthorne Domer asked Her Majesty's Government:

What was the cost of the police operationin connection with the “Sack Parliament” demonstration on 9 October. [HL108]

The Minister of State, Home Office (Baroness Scotland of Asthal): I understand from the Commissioner of Police of the Metropolis that the estimated total policing cost was £298,000. Of this, £221,000 was for opportunity costs and £77,000 for additional policing costs.

whilst you are right they do overemphasise the costs to get reallotted the same cash next year (like local councils pointlessy building speed bumps to keep their spending high) they did actually have to pay the cops brought in to police the event mate.

That's not the normal number of police in parliament square on a weekday, they have to be taken from elsewhere and/or paid overtime.

It wasn't just the cops in the square either, remember there was a loose cordon around the whole of westminster checking people passing through. On top of that, there are operational costs - like the vehicles and the cameras, and probably specialist costs (there is almost certainly and 'anarchist squad' in the met, we see them every time).

article here if you fancy it:
